StarNES Part I: Rise of Galactic Empires

Since I already have basic commerce tech, shouldn't my economy be much better than everyone elses?

But who's got the hivemind then? Alex?

Erik, can you really do that? Do it then! This NES will get even cooler!
The link-fu is strong in me...

Not only CAN I do it, but I HAVE done it already! So far including all the homeworlds of the civs on the most recent map + myself.

Here's the incredibly good news: As long as GN keeps the STARS in the same place, he can recolor and change influence all he likes and the links will still work!

The good news: I'm making a complete web page area to support this, which will act as a minor Galactipedia. (Oh, and I can link to his map with my formatting!)

The bad news: That means it'll be off-site.

The incredibly bad news: To make sure all your stars are in, you will have to list, post or pm, the name and LOCATION of your stars, formatted so I can add it to the html. Location is expressed as "x, y, 4". If I don't get it in the right format, it might not get added!
Correct format is as follows, italics indicating required data:
<area shape="circle" coords="364, 1016, 4" href=centauri.html>

This example is for Xen's homeworld. I see several people who have not listed a homeworld - including myself - but that's necessary to get added here. Mine's now called Tenarr, just so GN catches it.

Oh, and you can also give a short text description for a star. Example: "Tenarr is the scenic homeworld of the Arkatus, but rather hostile due to radiation."

How long can it be? :mischief:

I'm going to name all the stars in my first story, which I SHOULD get to writing by the next update.

Update 1: First Contacts
SD 005

Many races throughout the section of the galaxy have begun to claim worlds and make contact with primitive and advanced races alike. The Alean Dominion claimed a number of systems [circled on the map] and discovered a strange, insect species which lives in a hive-based society ruled by the egg-laying queens. However, this race was merely left alone. A much more advanced society – the Telrah Empire – was discovered, its technology far above that of the Dominion. The Telrah have reddish skin, ranging from a light pink to a deep, almost neon red, and dark fur – hair is what they call it – upon their heads. They also appear to have slight psychokinetic powers which are just strong enough to thwart Alean attempts to mind-read.

The Arkatus expand steadily into space, claiming a number of systems. They discover a minor race of large, stone-aged, hairy, and incredibly strong beings called Oou [pronounced Oh-u]. Despite being technologically primitive and incredibly barbaric in appearance, the Oou live in advanced tribal societies.

The Earth Federation opted to be different from other races, spending money on the claiming of systems – small orbital gun turrets were brought to each system and placed around the planet considered “optimal for survival”. In one system, however, the Federation got a rude surprise! Someone else had already appeared to claim the system, a number of armed ships patrolling the most fertile, life-filled planet. The Terrans opted to lay their claim on a planet ignored by these aliens – a primordial planet with lots of tectonic activity. Though less stable than the fertile world, its resources are more open and will be easily extracted. The gun turrets now orbit the planet along with the ships.

New Rome was expanding ferociously, its people so invigorated by the rush towards Roma Resurgensis that private citizens opted to colonize willingly one system – for no charge! However, its luck at claiming systems and driving off aliens was far less successful. In one system, alien ships slipped into the system undetected and set up a base filled with pioneer colonists. Small conflicts between the ships of the aliens of the New Roman fighter-scouts ensued, but neither caused any damage. In another system, strangely Terran-like ships barged into the system, ignored the fighter-scouts guarding – which refused to open fire because of the gun turrets being towed along behind the other ships – and claimed a primordial, volcanically-active world. No attempts to verbally contact have been made yet, as it is assumed they are aliens.

The Dwarji Union managed to easily colonize the nearest star, which could be reached in a matter of days via FTL travel. A bunch of other systems were also claimed, including one where an alien race that cannot be communicated with yet has claimed as well. Though there might be future conflicts with that race, they are currently leaving the Dwarji claims alone – and the Dwarji are doing the same.

The Atha’an Ayende’s expansion plans went fully on schedule until their scouts came across what appeared to be space creatures! Turns out that they’re really ships built by some kind of reptilian alien civilization, but contact cannot be established because of unfortunate glitches in translation equipment -- and a lack of translators on the ship, as well. However, both races make it clear that there is no ill will meant towards the other.

The Tau Federation, seemingly thinking that all other races would understand them, attempted to make contact with the Tectons, a nearby race of silicon-based intelligent lifeforms. Didn’t really work out. They also attempted to construct a heavy ship chassis capable of launching large weapons, but those blew up in their faces. Experience from the construction has led to some slight developments towards them, though. Otherwise, things went fairly well. Systems were claimed like crazy. Some slight conflicts with Illidi ships – who of course cannot be communicated with – went no where as the two races’ ships tensely patrol their sections of a claimed system.

Nothing really happened in the Illidi Empire aside from [almost violent] contact with the Tau and well-executed system claims.

Riddla expansion went unimpeded by aliens thusfar, but some radio signals are detected from a nearby [north on the map, even if there’s no “north”] system.

The Tegory Wuma experience similar circumstances, discovering a minor race huddled in a nearby system, but with a few added weapons it should be simple to invade them.

The Verilur discovered a minor disunited race AND a minor empire – both of which could be exploited. Alien ruins have been detected free-floating in space somewhere – they cannot be exploited without proper science ships or a Gal. Station, unfortunately.

NPC Diplomacy:

To: The Alean Dominion
From: The Telrah Empire

We of the mighty Telrah greet you beings of the non-origin world…

[OOC: If anyone is displeased by what happened this turn, realize that a number of things are determined by the rolling of a die. Faulty orders will usually result in bad things happening, but if you get a favorable roll then you might GAIN something from your mistake…

Oh yes. And I’d forgotten how long it takes to update maps and stats and stuff. I’ll not make the same mistake again. Thank you for your patience, future updates shan’t take as long.]

OOC: GREAT UPDATE! :goodjob:

On a more pragmatic note: Since you didn't speicify most of the systems' climates, terrains, and native life in the update, should I just do that myself? I promise I won't make them all idyllic edens where people will want to go... :mischief:

But if you want to specify them yourself, then that's fine with me as well.

OOC: Great!

Hey, Xen, since you ended upu in the same system, can we agree on a system type and planets in it?

sure- I fdor one think it woul look rather neat on the map- however, i dont think we can formalize the deal until at least one of us has the tech for translation, so how about a defacto non settlment/protect from any othe rpeople tryign to move in on it pact, until we can finalize the agreement (assumign you dont have translation already)

@GN- remember, I spent money on upgrading my main system, IIRC

@Insane P
sure, apperntlly, I got thier first, so i get first pick ;) :p
