Hi,

I really need help here. I've installed Crysis Demo for testing. After playing for a while, I found out that my laptop is not powerful enough for it and decided to get rid of it. Unfortunately, I can't uninstall it since I need Admin right to uninstall it. It's weird since all other apps do not need admin right for this tasks.

Is there any way for me to uninstall it other than deleting it right away? I tried any way I know but still failed to uninstall it.

Just another question: What is the best OS for gaming rig within next 3 years? Vista or XP? I'm thinking of buying a new PC now.

XP will probably be best for at least 3 years; in fact, that's about when Vista will finally be compelling enough to switch.

Thank you. I'm new with vista. Turns out, I just need to use admin rights to do it.

I still like playing old games like Railroad Tycoon 2 and Pharaoh. I also want to play some upcoming new games like CXL and the Sims 3 (yea... I'm a builder). DX10 games need vista which means I don't have any choice but to choose vista.

IMO, DX10 is one of the less compelling reasons to go with Vista. There are a total of zero DX10 exclusive titles released to date. In titles with DX10 support, running them in DX9 mode in Vista gives increased performance, and little visual difference.

Could you please list the main reasons why you consider Vista better than XP?

Reasons why I prefer Vista over XP:

  • Support for more memory
  • Better performance with large amounts of memory
  • Better performance for heavy multitasking and multithreaded optimized scenarios
  • Improved Explorer (yay breadcrumbs)
  • Search box on the start menu
  • Improved Windows Media Centre
  • OpenAL audio
  • Improved wireless configuration
  • Improved Windows Firewall
  • Improved task scheduler
  • Improved Windows Update
  • Improved Task manager

I recommend FAR Manager for a file explorer if you dont care for a GUI and VLC/Foobar2000 combo for A/V

I'd recommend getting Process Explorer by Sysinternals (now part of Microsoft), for anyone dissatisfied with XP task manager's capabilities. It's better than Vista's Task manager too.

I'm well aware of 3rd party programs for some of the items in my list, however, Vista improves the ones I listed to a point where there's either a significant improvement when I'm using machines where I don't have the leeway to install a slew of programs, or have enough improvements so that I no longer feel the need to install extra programs even on machines where I have full access.

FWIW, VLC is horrid for HD playback, it doesn't handle 1080p content well at all. Stick to media player classic with either ffdshow or coreavc.

Also, Windows Media Centre has a load of awesome features which VLC doesn't do, you can run TV through it via cable (or other means), and it automatically detects and downloads descriptions for channels and shows, and functions like a fully featured DVR box.

I'm just saying If what in the task manager matters to you, then you should download Process Explorer. It's features that allow you finer control and monitoring of applications.

Aside from a services tab, what's the great improvement for Vista Task manager?

Process manager is great, I use it on occasion when I need features that the Windows taskman doesn't have, but every time that I don't need to install a 3rd party program on a given machine saves me time. I've got nothing against 3rd party programs, I just wanted to point out that there are advantages to having good programs bundled with Windows, and that if everyone posts their favorite 3rd party programs for all the features I listed, this thread could get quite long.

Processes are linked to services, this can save time messing around in the command prompt to figure stuff out.
Lots of new information that can be enabled for processes, and right-click->properties brings up the properties for the exe.
Performance tab is also quite improved.
