I play this game for years now, but i never have seen an AI stealing technologys from me. I know, if i do it as human player, there is the risk to be detected.

But I don't know, how does it affect the game. Am i at war automatically, when I'm detected? (I never used it)

And a second question, i never got a message, that an AI has stolen technologys from me, so i guess, they don't do it?
Or a better question, has anybody anywhere got a message, that an AI opponent tried to steal a tech?

thx.

Just last night. Caught the Greeks trying to steal a Tech.

I've tried to steal a tech... never successfully. Also, it's expensive to try and steal a tech. It seems cheeper to just buy it.

They don't always declare war when you get caught. It depends on relative military strength. I've also gotten the message that someone has tried to steal a tech from me. I then watch thier cash and tech and you can actually witness them stealing it. Suddenly they are down a significant amount of cash and they have a new tech.

I've never got such a message. Is it a requester-like message box, or is it like the notification, that you've chopped a forest?

Does it get cheaper to steal a tech once your spy experience goes up? I never really use the spy, maybe i should start tinkering ?!

I think that I got a pop-up saying that the AI had been caught trying to steal a tech once. I never really use spies that much. I have managed to steal a few techs though.

Nothing affects your spy experience at all except the communist government, which has a higher chance of succeeding.

To repeat: MISSIONS DO NOT AFFECT YOUR SPY EXPERIENCE!!!!!

Well that's just silly then isn't it?

:crazyeye:

Modern techs are very expensive to buy. If I have a tech that I don't want to trade with AI openents I prefer to steal it.

Too bad they didnt make espionage a more viable aspect of Civ3... could have made for an alternative mode of play in later games when things start to get boring (at least I think things start to get boring by the time you get tanks)

The only thing that repitedly AI tried to steal from me were Military Plans (in fact they are managing realy well on this one). But stealing a tech never, unless they have 100% success!
Stealing a tech thow is very very expencive,i mean it does don make sence 5000-6000 gold for a high chance success of the operation is way too much,so i never try to steal,as said buying comes cheaper.

I've never successfully stolen a tech... EVER

Granted, I tend to play on the higher difficulties, but still, I should succeed sometimes.

Espionage sucks in civ III. It's almost entirely useless. The only thing I've ever accomplished is to successfully plant a spy so I could count their hundreds of riflemen.

It would be nice if it at least indicated the percentage chance or soemthing. Since safely obviously doesn't mean much when you fail every time and also get caught.

Well you're not suppose to know if they stole your tech, thats why it's a spy mission, you don't really loose the tech, like someone said the only way to really notice it is, watch their tech and money.

I have had the message come up about catching someone trying to plant a spy or trying to steal tech/plans.

If you haven't received the message either your opponent has tried or you haven't caught him.

I sometimes try it, but only when I don't want all my money ending up in the hands of the AI! It's also good if they've got techs that will take ages to research, like Monarchy. Not that I've ever tried that early in the game...

Great point! I've given the AI all my money to get a tech from them because I am falling behind, then the AI uses the money to jump ahead in research. It's a race that can't be won! Can't believe I never thought of it that way.

I guess that is the time to try and steal!

I stole a technology from mongols early on in the middle ages. I got invention! I was probably 2nd to last in tech and mongols was ahead by invention. Now i guess we're even ;). I was about to quit the game when after i saved, i thought, hey what the hell, and i randomly picked mongols and stole their technology. If i failed i woulda quit right there. By the way, I stole diplomatically too.

In many games if I have been warring throughout I may not have built as many libs and unis as I would have liked. When I am in the late industrial there may come a point where I am turning +600gpt but my research times are still 7-8 turns. If I have a spy in a civ that I would want to go to war with I would turn off research, save for 5-6 turns and go for the safe 80% chance steal. When it comes in I have saved 3 turns. Rinse repeat. If I really do want to go to war I may try the middle 40-60% after 4 turns. If I get it, cool. If not, WAR time.

In PTW only communism got you about 80% chance to steal a tech from a non-communist civ. Other governemnts gave you less chance (65% for safe steal). I never did test the new governments in C3C though.

EDIT: To answer the original question: I never got a message that the AI tried to steal my tech, however I once noticed that a civ got two techs in lightning spped (3 turns for Atomic Theory and Electronics). I was the only one to know them, so I suspect a steal there.

I got other messages, like the fact that they tried to expose my spy, start a propaganda or steal my plans

I fins stealing it usually costs more than buying it!The only time stealing works for me if is I have a bad relationship with the civ in question and they are asking for just way to much!
