Steam is running a sale for civ IV complete and civV for those who want to suffer through civ V:crazyeye:

Civ IV complete is now $7.49 till 1:00 PM Eastern US Time. tomorrow (Saturday)

I know I have bought this game twice. My first copy of civ 4 is scratched. and my second download version was through direct2download and that went belly up. Bought by gamefly and my version was never resuscitated. So, I may just go ahead and buy this again. God knows I have spent enough time playing it....

Civ works fine off Gamefly. I got mine from D2D. If you setup/transitioned your Gamefly account you should have all your old D2D games, except maybe the most obscure ones. Gamefly has all of my games transitioned now and I have quite a few. D2D was the first DD service I used years ago.

Actually picked it up myself. Like having it on steam instead of having to find the physical media.

With a development cost lower than 20 millions(15 maybe?) and more than 3 million copies sold Civ4 certainly have been a financial success for Firaxis.

Holy cow....
I basically gave up thinking that my copy of civ4 complete would never ever make it to gamefly. But sure enough I just logged in and my purchase is available for me. Woo hoo! :D

Time to Civ...

Why would anyone use Steam?
Isn't it like renting the game instead of actually buying it? If I got the choice, which I have, like everybody else, I'd rather not drag a ball and chains.

You just need the disc to install Civ4 BTS. It is unneeded to play the game.
Steam is a totally superfluous enterprise.

What Steam does through its interface and ongoing popularity, is keep the ball rolling for the propagation of digital downloads. I respect the opinions of naysayers, but as a longtime user my own experience has been pleasantly uneventful.

Steam lets me install my games from anywhere. I love that ability. Several new computers also comes without an optical drive. And Steam makes it so easy to buy new games. Buy-install-play is just so much better than having to wait for snailmail. The social-features are nice too.

I'm not 100% comfortable with trusting an American company with my entire gaming collection. That is a downside and if Steam was a European or Norwegian service I would feel a lot better(EU/Norway have superior customer protection compared to the US).

At the same time, as this and many other threads prove, physical media doesn't last forever and may get damaged.

BiC, Steam is more than fine. I do all my games digital download now...have for years really. You will soon find the disk to be obsolete and everything DD.

Software is about owning licences, whether you buy a hard disk or from a download service like Steam. So no, it is not at all like renting the game.

Granted, you may all very well be right. And who am I to question the use of Steam? I guess if one buys lots of games, it will have its uses.
Probably I'm just biased against companies that sell a service I judge limited... amongst other things

No, for two reasons. First of all, under EU law, you don't "own a licence" for ordinary consumer software purchases, for all that they like to pretend you do. You own a copy. Furthermore, of course, practically speaking, there is nothing that can be done to stop you installing and using it for the rest of your life, whether or not the publisher likes it.

Secondly, Steam maintains the fiction (also bogus under EU law) that it is a subscription service. Don't like a change to the Terms and Conditions? Guess what - you lose all your games.

Pick the option where Civ can't be taken from you once you've got it.

I bought Civ V with Gods and Kings during the Holidays for $20 US. It was 75% off at Steam.

As far as I can tell, I have to be connected to the internet and Steam to play the game.

My computer doesn't have enough horsepower to execute the game very well. Although I remember playing the Demo way-back. And it easily failed to encouraged me to run out and upgrade right away.

Also, there is no tangible game box and materials to add to my clutter of games. :P

Obviously I'm still playing Civ 4 and lurking in here.
