Steam in offline mode causing my mod to crash!

I thought I was being paranoid when I suspected the latest patch was causing random crashes but could not pin point any pattern until today!

Everything started working perfectly fine all day and then suddenly wham...I get a CTD on loading my mod after a few changes.

At first I thought it was a typo or something but noticed all I edited was some offset tags in the UI modules I am working on.

Then it occurred to me that the only other environment change was that I went offline in steam.

So I ran a few tests:

1. Reloaded the mod still in offline mode and crashed.
2. Reloaded the mod in online mode and loaded perfectly fine
3. Reloaded mod again in online mode and work fine.
4. Reloaded the mod offline mode and crashed!

What is steam doing that requires internet access to load my mod (as I don't remember specifying any options anywhere!)?

This behavior (bug?) has only started occurring after the new patch as I have developed my mod almost exclusively in offline mode and very rarely go online within steam.

Moderators...should this probably be moved into the tech support thread?

I only posted it here as I was hoping ti was a simple mod flag change somewhere but noticed a lot of people with similar issues loading mods!

Can you try something ...

Before going "offline", right click on the Steam icon in the system tray, select Settings, then the In Game tab, and then uncheck "Enable Steam Community In-Game"

Then go off line and see if your mod crashes

cheers

Thats the concern....I double checked that it was not enabled based on the announcement made in this forum.

I just gave it another shot as I type this and it failed.

To add some further info.....

- If steam is online but the internet is disconnected the mod will load fine.

- But if steam is offline and the internet is connected/disconnected it will crash the mod.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Restart Steam in offline mode
2. Start Civilization V
3. Click Mods
4. Click Accept
5. Wait 30 seconds

Expected results:
The game works normally.

Actual results:
The game crashes.

Good (bad?) to see I am not the only one.

It seems that Civ5 post patch is expecting something from steam in online mode.

Can the devs confirm why this is?

BTW, normal games seem to start up fine. Its just mods that does this.

Firaxis support, can you confirm if this can be replicated on your end?

I know it is probably not as high priority as the other "can't get the game started" crashes, but it really puts a dampener on us modders!

Thanks.

Let me know if you need any further info.

BTW I still have all my crash logs from these tests for what it is worth!

Just to let those investigating know that the latest update patch for steam was installed yesterday and did not fix this issue as I was hoping so it must be something to do with the game specifically.

I did another test run and replicated the problem again.

This one is on our end. We've found the problem, and should have this out when the next update is ready.

The Ghost of Firaxis future.

Thanks dshirk.

Good to hear you tracked down the problem.

And you are...?

Not sure who this is directed at, but I assume its dshirk. Dshirk's from Firaxis given the avatar and title. One of the mods can correct me if wrong!

The same thing happened to me yesterday

I have this issue as well in offline mod. World builder/buddy mod will not load nor will the regular scenarios load in MOD mode.

Peace.

Was the update ever made? I'm still having this issue.
In my last attempt, all went well pre-offline, but after going offline and starting civ some texture maps were said to be missing and the map window in lower right corner failed to show. Example mod missing texture would be the Ranger unit mod.

Also, I've noticed that after returning to online mode after trying offline, the mods all reload themselves and occasionally never load and require me to remove the Civ5ModsDatabase.db file.

Just wanted to throw in that I too am still having this issue. Two months later it seems....
