I currently have a mac and i was wondering if i should get it on the mac store or the steam website ?

In hindsight, I wish I had gone with the app store version as I find Steam annoying.

OTOH if it were not for the Steam version and a sale on Amazon, I would not have taken the leap. Also, judging from reports here, the app store version does not get updated as quickly as the Steam version.

If you ever want to play on Windows, either on your Mac or on a PC, perhaps to get proper modding compatibility, the Steam version is cross-platform.

If you want to get the new versions as soon as they are produced by Firaxis, you need the Steam version.

If you want multiplayer capability across the Internet, then I think you need the Steam version.

If you need Steam anyway, for other games that are only available via that route, then you might as well get the Steam version.

If you can live without all of the above, the App Store version should be OK for you.

I have the app store version and I'm happy with it. I only play single-player only, so it's good for what I need.

EDIT: And though the fixes/patches don't come out as quickly for the app store version, that is sometimes a good thing. Some of those patches wreak havoc, and they have to be re-tweaked. By the time the patch hits the app store, things have been tweaked/fixed properly.

I have the app store version and i am happy not to hassle with steam.

On another note, the patches might come out a bit later, but most (casual/recreational) players can live with that I suppose. Patch is later, but seems of better quality if the last "fall patch" was any indication.

I chose the Steam version because of the pricing they had on all the DLC (pre G&K). I was able to get the original Civ 5 + all the available DLC for less than half price when I bought it.

I must agree.

I have the App Store version and I have to say, I am perfectly happy with my game. I didn't try the Steam version, BUT I do have some Steam Games and I honestly have to way I am perfectly fine with no multiplayer, no modding support from Steam, and most of all, since I don't have the Steam version, I don't have achievements.

In my opinion, achievements just make a game more annoying because you'll just get pissed at that one achievement you can't get after so much hours of trying, it will really decrease the game quality.

I have the Steam version, simply because I already had Steam for: a) cheaper prices, and b) TF2. In addition, it's cross platform, and I guarantee you that you will be able to get it again if you change the machine you're playing on. I'd say Steam is better, because while yes, it's DRM, it's DRM that doesn't complain if you need another installation.

I have both, so I have no axe to grind.

The App Store version allows multiple installations on Macs you register with the same iTunes account. I believe it also allows simultaneous use of two or more copies, whereas Steam logs you out of one Mac when you start it up on another.

I would never buy the App Store version. No PC version for when you're behind a patch for six months. No PC version for when you want to mod.

Both of the above are reasons I just play the game on my Bootcamp partition, and forget the Mac version, because it's not really what I call 'supported'. It's just supported enough to get your money.
