Steam Q&A and FAQ

Moderator Action: Thread merged into the Steam FAQ thread.

You may have downloaded the 2 at the same time, but issues relating to steam have nothing to do with Civ V and as such should not be discussed on the general discussion board for Civ V.

There have been multiple 10+ page threads that would beg to differ, but I defer to the mods -- who are quite active and don't hesitate to re-route/move/close threads.

I would leave it to them to pronounce the appropriateness of threads.

heh... and voila :-)

Are you sure? I'm almost positive I have a Steam icon in my tray since I installed CiV.

When you minimize or exit Steam it goes off into the background where it barely uses any RAM (most of the resources it uses are to run the graphical window and interface you look at and click on). To completely exit Steam you can right click on the icon or when Steam is open click on Steam (upper left, where File often is in other programs) and then exit/quit/whatever it is.

1. respect for you, shane, for taking the rap for steam

2. on the package of my game is written, that i just had to activate the game per internet, not to run a second program every time - that is a wide difference - it is an obligation to contract, so steam affairs are Civ5 affairs ...
...that could bring some problems about warranty and the right of withdrawal (in germany)

3. why your first post have so many rules?

4. please practice forbearingness for us, we are old bearded gamers, we wanna play civ5 and we have no idea what to do with this new type of things like steam.

Is there a way to view the progression of an achievement? For example the achievement Forty-Niner requires you to build 1000 mines across any number of playthroughs. Am I able to view the number of mines I need to build to finish this achievement?

Thank you

It actually pains me to see all these people new to steam. It also pains me how much people are raging at it without fully understanding what it is. I've been using steam for roughly 3 years, I answer some questions.

I don't think so, seeing as how CiV has no achievements page. I haven't been able to use my steam account whilst playing CiV (offline mode, internet problems on my regular comp), I don't remember seeing anything like that in any game.

Edit:Sorry, I assumed the post would merge together.

I was recently banned for "ban evasion" on the steam forums but I've never been banned before and I only ever used one login name never made multiple logins could this be some kind of mistake? I recently had PC trouble and was forced go onto a old PC that was offline for ALONG TIME this is the PC I was on when the ban took place but I don't recall ever being banned from steam forums on it either! How do I appeal this has to be a mistake can they make mistakes and ban someone they think was another user previously banned before?

I haven't yet bought Civ5, but I have a question about how the offline play works.

So I understand I can load Civ5 on more than 1 computer (my desktop and laptop for example). But the FAQ states you need to log in to steam to switch computers, does that mean I would need to log in to steam every time I want to use offline mode one of the two computers? Or I would just have to log into steam once on each computer the first time and never again to have access to offline mode?

Next question: Is there a LAN mode in Civ5. So you can connect two computer with a LAN without being on the internet and be able to do multiplayer?

There is an achievements page:

Yep, you can install it on as many computers as you like.

You need to log into Steam every time to play the game. However, you can use the offline mode, just make sure when you install it you are connected to the net, tell Steam to remember your log in details, and then you can disconnect the computer from the net and whenever you log in again Steam will prompt you (after checking for a connection) to go in offline mode.

You can also going into offline mode when online too.

I'm pretty sure I've read mention of it. You should be able to do that. (I Don't have the game myself and can't check).

Open up Steam and right click on Civ5, select "Delete Local Content".

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Steam -> uninstall.

And yes you can reinstall it again whenever you want, just make sure you remember your username and password for Steam as your copy of Civ5 is tied to your Steam account.

I downloaded the demo from Fileplanet, (4 1/2 hours). I ran the steam setup file and now have a steam account. How do I get the demo to run? The folder I unzipped to has four files the first being "Sid Meier's Civilization V-Demo_disk1.sim" The other three are similar with different extentions so I don't see why I would have to d/l it again from the Steam site. Any ideas?

Um, to be honest, no idea. I've never tried to download a Steam demo from anywhere else and never heard of someone doing so. I'd download it via Steam again unless you have a very small monthly data usage limit thing.

Is there a way to skip all the annoying "are you SURE you want to start in off-line mode" messages, when you just want to play a little Civ?

Unfortunately no, and I do agree this is annoying and that VALVe needs to make that quicker. Sorry :(

:) Several times I've sat waiting for the game to load only to discover that I must've clicked cancel somewhere along the way - the confirmation buttons keep switching side :|
..but you know all this.
Just had to let out some ... steam

Thx for replying, Scamp

Steam mod/reps - please, PLEASE make the CiV updates voluntary, not mandatory. For one thing (as others have noted), a player may want to finish their current game before updating (as a significant patch will render saved games unplayable). Even worse, though, a new patch can make the game completely unplayable, as it is now for me, since 'the steam servers are busy' but the game won't run since the patch already started. This is rather like GM issuing a recall but making cars unusable unless they are going direct to the dealer for the recall adjustment, where you have to wait for days while others in the same position are queued up ahead of them.

I'm not one of the steam naysayers - I appreciate many of the advantages it gives me with the game, but I find ANY setup that prevents me from playing a game I paid $60 for, even temporarily, highly consumer unfriendly, to say the least!

When I installed the game it automatically attached itself to the steam account it found on my computer which happened to be my son's account. Now sometimes, if I play civ5, my son may be logged in in his own house 3 miles away playing Counter Strike. If I log out from civ5 I can't log in again, as the account is in use elsewhere. Even though I legally bought my game boxed in a local shop, I can't play it when my son is doing counter strike? Or can I make a separate steam account and transfer civ5 to that? Or is it now unalterable linked to my son's steam account?

I have to do something else now, but tomorrow I'll be back here to see if anybody has a solution. Thank you for your time anyway.

Also, I tried to play civ5 against my youngest son who still lives at home and has his own computer in his room. I installed the game also on his computer and tried to log into the same multiplayer game but it didn't seem to work. Formerly you could play hotseat games, but that doesn't seem possible now?
