My army of automated workers have decided that every tile needs a fort regardless of what may already be on it. It doesn't matter if the tile is empty or contains an improvement to harness a critical resource, they're going to put a fort there. At first I thought it was the automation style, but no. Whether "improve nearest city", "build trade network" or just general "build improvements", they now invariably build forts, forts and more forts. I'd rather not have to micromanage the nearly 100 of them... Is there something else I can do to fix this?

At some point in the game forts become, for quite awhile, the best improvement to build. They provide the resource on which they are built and provide better hammer/food/commerce than anything else. :sigh:

I set my auto workers to leave forests and old improvements. This helps a bit. Mainly I don't automate any workers until after I have the tech that allows lumber mills.

The only "real" fix would be to edit the improvements file and change what the forts provide beyond defense.

And in doing so, I'd have to make them an überimprovement that has all the benefits of all the others combined. And then of course, something else comes along and replaces them... Bugger.

I have been thinking on this this morning. All you really need do is to make the forts give no extra comerce, hammers or food. then it will go back to the vanilla BtS of only building forts on resources outside your workable area of cities.

 I never knew that they was providing resource on build.

Just like when the AI builds it's city on top of a resource. Immediate resource usage.
