STR-03 Viking Traders

Looking interesting guys. Back from Palma de Mallorca  I will keep watching you until tomorrow I'm off until Sunday again...

I went to Palma when I was little. I only remember viewing some big yaughts and an aquarium. We were planning on going there next week, but I didn't want to be away from home for two weeks since I'm also going to Rome.

Not a very inspired report, but right now the game is just 'teching along'

Rocketry comes in on turn 3.

Satellites comes in on turn 11.

Fission will come in next turn, I sped it along with a Great Scientist. We should head for Fusion next, and use the Great Engineer to hurry the Space Elevator, which by then should be about 10 turns from finishing in Haithabu.

karr1255 is UP, with Bede on deck. I think we should be able to finish this before I leave:

pre turn - Get 60 gold from Qin for nothing and trade him hit singles for 8 gpt.

T1 - Fission in and going for Fusion at 90% (-20).

T3 - Produce research in Bjorgven and shave Fusion down to 8.

T6 - Oh they grow up so fast. :(

mansafree.jpg

T7 - Get 120 gold from Mansa for nothing.

T8 - YOU need help? Yeah right.

huynacry.jpg

T9 - Apollo Program done and I switch Nidaros and a few others to space part production. And fire up our golden age.

T10 - Qinyna has Mass Media but that souldn't be too bad.

T11 - Fusion and the free engineer are in. I set research to Ecology and rush the Elevator(would have taken 7 more).

T12 - Finally:

And Qinyna doesn't even have Satellites.

T15 - Qin wants to trade his movies for rice oh why not. We complete our first SS Casing. And Mansa becomes Asokas vassal again...

We have 4 more turns of golden age power. The game looks like it's in the bag.

The Space Race is a foregone conclusion, yes. We only need to worry about the UN. But we might even manage to finish the Spaceship before the Diplomatic Victory will come into play. They first need to build it, and then vote for Secretary-General before they can select the Diplomatic Victory option.

It's a go for launch. Got it.

"Houston, we have a problem"

All was in order and the parts were coming along nicely, four casings and a Cockpit were done and the Engine was on schedule, research was cooking with gas, only needed Genetics for the Stasis Chamber, everybody in the country was happy and healthy, the neighbors, Mansa and Asoka were Friendly, the Qinyana Axis was at least tolerant, Shaka and Toku, the troublemakers, were ignorant and poor.

This was the only weakness that I could see

Str03_041.jpg

Then Qin built the UN and Qinyana got hisselfs elected to the SecGen post

Str03_044.jpg

He only needs about 4 points to nail down the Diplomatic Victory, which led directly to this

Str03_037.jpg

If the Axis of Evil can eliminate a Mali city that just might give them the votes to come out on top. So that is just what they attempted and the result was World War, with Toku and Shaka on the sidelines, waiting to jackal up the pieces.

So I put the economy on a war footing

Str03_048.jpg

and shut off the research budget so I could do some upgrading and rushing as needed and started to research Flight. Fighters and bombers can hold the enemy off our shores and our thin navy can deal with the weakened flotilla.

Then I gave Mansa and Asoka some technology and some iron so they could put down rails and build bombers and get some Artillery trained, sent some MechInfantry and cavalry into Mali and discovered this

Str03_050.jpg

The Chinese had to have been waiting off the shores of Mali for their marching orders. They spent themselves against the defenders at Djenne, our MechInfantry and cavalry finished off the survivors. The Chinese escorts sailed on through the ice pack and started wrecking our fishing nets and Huyana sent this fleet against our west

Str03_051.jpg

Two rounds of drafting MechInfantry, the return of the troops from Mali and some upgrades got enough force to whittle that landing down with the loss of only one Mech Infantry, while the navy sank the transports and destroyers defending, though not until after the troops were ashore.

Huyana is flighting bombers against the west coast and Qin is harassing the south. I lacked the cash to do much naval upgrading, so that should be the next priority.

And meanwhile the Diplomatic Victory came to a vote and the results were in our favor

Str03_049.jpg

And you can see that if Qinyana had gotten the votes of Shaka and Toku, they would have fallen short, anyway, but not by a whole lot and burning a Mali, Indian or (God forbid) Viking city could have put them close to the victory.

And at the very close the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty came to a vote and was passed. After seeing what nukes can do to a Space Launch effort, I didn't want that particular cloud hanging over our heads. Nukes could also turn the tide in the UN.

We won't have the muscle to take the fight overseas until we have a better navy, some artillery and more modern troops. I am putting up recycling centers as we are going to need all the healthy citizens we can stand, and the entertainment tax is running 20%, to cover the costs of conscription and to make up for the loss of the luxuries the Qinyana was shipping us.

Neither Qin nor Huyana will speak to us and I can't wait to see which way the Japanese and Zulu bullfrogs will jump. I bought some healthy resources from Shaka to make up for the wrecked fishing nets.

Judging from the size of the troops landed in both coasts I would venture to say that both Qin and Huyana are out of offensive power right now, and sinking Huyana's fleet of destroyers and transports should keep him off our shores while we prepare a counter punch. Qin still has a navy and could make it hot in the east if he gets another fleet of transports across the water though.

"Ad astra per aspera"

Good job, Bede :goodjob: , when you wrote they declared on Mansa, i thought they would crush him... I also thought maybe we should crush a few of Toku's city's, but now he and Shaka are neutral that ain't neccesary anymore.
Lesson: we should have build the UN ourself, we could easily have done it....

Got it. Play this weekend.

Whew. Through your entire report I was expecting a 'Huayna Capac/Qin Shi Huang has won a Diplomatic Victory" Good job on defending Mali and our homeland

Don't think building it would have helped. Qinyana still had the votes for the SecGen slot, though they didn't have the votes for the victory thanks to the war declaration which put Shaka and Toku on the abstainer's list.

And when Huyana showed up on the west coast I thought they would crush us :D

And you are going to have to pay the penalty for the heavy conscription though without the possibility of capturing any towns to pay the bills. ;)

Sending a fleet into Inca right now is probably suicide as his bombers would tear it to shreds. They are flying out of the town closest to the west.

I was under the impression that the UN builder didn't need to use it..so that would have been useless indeed.
And Huayna/Qin attacking Mansa was probably not finally a smart move from the AI, but a mistake. I'll be nice to Toku and especially to Shaka to keep them out the Capac/Qin camp. Let's hope Asoka or Mansa will research flight for us.
But winning a spacerace while you are in a defending war, that's something!

The Secretary General vote comes up automatically right after the building is built and the contestants are the builder and the largest nation (population). The SecGen then gets to choose what issues appear on the next ballot. And then after three ballots the Sec Gen position comes up again.

HC lands near Bangalore...will my mech get the defensive bonus from Asoka's city?, otherwise i gift it, but HC is willing to talk:

peacewithhckc9.jpg

hmm, he will still be at war with Asoka and Mansa and we can't let them fight Capac/Qin on their own, but i have four techs to persuade them to make peace so i do it. Then this one:

peacewiththeothersgg3.jpg

Fine. Back to the space race. We only have to research Genetics.

3 Defensive pact with Asoka, resourch deals with Capac/Qin

5 We get flight from Mansa for something else. Genetics in 8 turns, then Haithabu can make the final SS thing

10 Realize i have to let the city's grow to get more votes. Everybody in Environmentalism cause of UN vote (while i was against)

13 Genetics comes in > Haithabu > SS Chamber

14 Refuse permanent allience with Asoka (Karr: your war declaration on Asoka didn't change nothing..)

15 1015AD We need 4 SS components, these will take 10, maybe 9 turns. It's up to Strauss to launch!

launch!

Are we already that close? I was about to continue my Ottoman solo game, but with victory so close I can't ignore this one. Expect my report in the coming hour.

EDIT: Oh, and we're building a spaceship in 1015? :mischief:

Turn 1 (1916): We voted no for Open Markets?:crazyeye:

Merge Great Engineer with Haithabu, shaving one turn off the Stassis Chamber.

Turn 3 (1918): SS Life Support completed in Whineycity.

Turn 7 (1922): SS Thrusters completed in the fishing village of Bjørgvin.

Turn 8 (1923):
