Strange game crash

I have been playing Civ 5 for about three months with no issues. Today, at about turn 545 I get a message that the game has stopped responding and windows is searching for a solution, none is found and the game shuts down. I restart from my last auto-save four turns earlier, play to the same point and the game crashes again. Anyone else experience this and know how to fix it?

Just tried running it in DirectX9 and the same thing happened. Also tried restarting from an earlier autosave, same result.

In the bugs forum, there are various threads about mysterious unexplained crashes that happen late in the game; some of those threads have savegames which show the crashes to be reproducible.

You can try varying the actions you take on the turns right before the crashes and see if by doing so you can avoid the crash. Otherwise, unfortunately, there's not much you can do other than to quit the game and start a new one.

I get the same thing. Often you have to go back 10 or 20 turns and play again before it goes away. Sometimes strategic view works. Someone suggested a change in the config file I tried, but didn't work.

I like the game now, particularly with the balance patches, but it's so frustrating putting in hours and not being able to finish. I think till these crashes are fixed, I'm done with Civ5. Sadly.
