Where did you get that from?

True. Well actually he didn't even have a wife in the usual sense until his very last day. He was "married to Germany" (his own words...) ;)
Hmm...okay...he was very strange. But I'd still vote for Bokassa.

My decisions are based on Diktaattoripörssi (Stock of Dictators 2002)

1 - J-B Bokassa (Ate little kids in peaceful demonstration, can it get any stranger?)
2 - 'Papa Doc' & 'Baby Doc' (Francois Duvalier & J-C Duvalier)
3 - Mobutu Sese Seko ('Seko' means 'Nutcase' in finnish, btw :D)
4 - Idi Amin (Black Nazi  )
5 - Enver Hoxha (More stalinistic than the Stalin himself)

Voted Papa Doc.

Bokassa. A very strange dude.

His name in Lingala means something like "supreme-god-appointed-ruler-for-life"

People wore cloth patterned with his face even though he impoverished Zaire to become on of the 10 richest individuals in the world...

What does the Diktaattoriporssi say on that Stroessner guy from Paraguay? I think he was a real case, too.

Stroessner was not a very flamboyant dictator, he was similar to Franco.Dull and conservative.

Lol:lol:

Flamboyant dictators, that is a funny weird concept:lol:

As for murdering pepole from your own country Pol Pot was small time compared to Stalin ( killed what 20-30 mil or so?). Even Hitler never achieved Stalin's levels of murder, tho he might have higher rate per year in power. Pol Pot was a fanatic ~ kinda took Mao's teachings and went to hell with it. Then we have some other guys not so well remembered ~ Leopold of Belgium (can't recall if he made it to the 20th century). Castro really doesnt fit on the list. Aside from being painted as evil by americans, Castro really hasnt been in the same class in terms of repression, murder etc as some of these guys.

This wasn't in XIX th century ?

Regards,

Paraguay had dictators in the XIX th century and the XX th century.
This Guy Stroessner ruled from 1950 to the end of the 80`s IIRC

It is a close match anyway within these options. I voted Kim Il Sung because this guy, and his son, has been keeping up appearances for more than half a century right now. And we do only have a slight idea what these guys have been doing to make a population of millions believe that they were some kind of semi-gods.

Yes I know this - in fact in many sud-american countries was despotism - I read the absolute excellent book of G.G. Marques "Autumn of patriarch".

But the war between Paraguay and almost all of its neigbourhood
I know that was in XIX century - I'm right or not ?

Regards

Yeah, I think that was in the mid 1800s under Lopez, the 20th century war in that region was the Chaco war.

I personally vote for Pol Pot.

He was definately the bloodiest and stupidest dictator of XX century - 1/3 of Cambodgia killed, depopulating cities, destroy the infrastructure etc !!

Regards.

"Papa Doc": "The people want to give me a nickname! I will show them! I will give myself my own nickname! Muwhaahahahaha!"

And als, Pol was mayeb a bloody dictator, but he was a mad genius.

If you liked that one, you might also like Alejo Carpentier's Reasons of State )(Alfred Knopf: 1976).

Both Carpentier and Marquez complained that writing novels about dictators was difficult because nothing they could imagine was as strange as the truth....

As for Paraguay and the Triple Alliance War:

At his death in 1862 López was succeeded by his son, Francisco Solano López. In 1865, influenced by his visits to the british and french empires, he tried to build his own empire, and thus led the nation into a war against Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, known as the Triple Alliance War. It devastated Paraguay, and ended with the death of López in 1870. More than half of the population was killed, the economy was destroyed, and territorial losses exceeded 142,500 sq km (55,000 sq mi). The country remained occupied by Brazil until 1876. After the war the country made a large effort to reconstruct its cities and economy. Immigration was encouraged, and subsidized agricultural colonies were established.

I think some of the 19th century dictators could give the 20th c. ones a run for their money!

At least he demonstrated to us what the real anarchy would be.
