Strategy discussion

Aztecs declared war at me (out of nowhere) and that brought us and the British close together. I did not have contact with the Vikings until rather late and then they were getting their butts kicked by the Brits. I do not think the Vikings had Chemistry until the end. Isabella demanded Techs and I gave those to her, so she was friendly. My Caravels were attacked only once, buy some Barbarian Pirates of the Caribbean, but I had not used up my free barbarian battles until then.

Without that strategy, I would have to wait until Flight to airlift units to Europe and that is late in the game.

It also helps that you won before Nationalism is discovered (since Constitution and Nationalism are now switched, and I've done all most Khmer UHV wins before the 2 recent patches). Otherwise you'll be surprised and angered by unreasonable demands (e.g. in various games I had England wants Singapore, Guangzhou or any of my Australian cities, Spain wants my Philippines city, a newly spawned India wanted Patna, and even Arabia demanded Jayakarta).

I did have both Nationalism and Constitution and there was one congress before the end. Is it not the case that only a civ close to you can request a city (or a civ that has culture in that city). Anyway noone demanded anything from me.

India did spawn and got Patna and Delhi, but that atually helped my stability.

The point of the above strategy is that it get you to the goal fast. Has anyone been able to do the Khmer UHV without going to flight and fairly late game stages.

My Khmer game, recently complete, was finished in the 17th century before America spawned without a chain of caravels, although that sounds a very good tactic.

I think lots of luck was involved though - I got both conqueror events despite not beelining Optics which allowed me to fill the Mesoamerican cities with Buddhists easily. Also, a fully Buddhist India hung around contributing their large cities to the goal, and the Mongols went Buddhist allowing me to spread to them despite Theocracy. In fact I didn't need to get to Europe at all! The farthest west I needed to spread it was a couple of cities in Persia.

EDIT: Just checked my savegames - turns out I won in 1703. Also, despite me not setting foot there Russia was almost completely Buddhist as well. Like I say, pretty lucky!

No, and your great strategy should be added to the wiki (please do it).
European civs can demand cities that "historically" were in their territory. (Hence the Spanish demands on Philippines, named after Philip II, and Singapore was basically a British East India Company trade post to start--I don't build Singapore any more, BTW). So they don't need any culture to ask for cities.

AnotherPacifist, I had problem entering the info to the wiki. I don't know what I am doing wrong or if I am doing anything right at all. I made an account, but when I try to edit the Khmer strategy page (I just want to add my strategy) it says that I don't have rights to do that. Could you (or anyone) help me with what I need to do.

I also wanted to add a very nice America savegame, I got lucky on my first try and got a very nice starting position.

Looks like you are doing it yourself, beat me by 1 minute. :)

Nice one 3miro.

BTW, all privateers will appear to you as barbarians - even though they are probably built by other civs such as Spain or England.

If anyone did build that Pirate, that had to be France. Anyway, if they appear as Barbs, then I still have to free barb combats then. The caravel did not lose a single HP.

I am playing Mali now, and WTH. OK I can somehow survive the Camel Archers, I can even swallow the Impi, but two games in a row I fail the first UHV. I have 2497 gold and someone has more than me. I have contact with all the European Civs and they all have the usual for the AI 10 - 20 gold. How can Mongolia/China/Japan/Khimer have more than that. What am I doing wrong?

Now that the the Christian Shrine has been moved to Jerusalem, the Arabs are often the wealthiest at around the time that the Turks spawn. They often build the Spinal Minaret too which helps this.

I do believe that the amount of gold each civ is willing to trade is not the same thing as how wealthy these civs are. France is usually quite wealthy also.

Mali is tough, but can still be done. Did you move up to the north coast of Africa to found one of your first cities up there in the Carthage spawn area? This is a critical move to be able to succeed with Mali from my experience.

The money in the trade screen is not all the money a civ owns, its only the amout which they are willing to trade. So the only way to check the real amount is by worldbuilder.
France is usually the top in cash. If there is no plague/war in europe they will spam great merchants and send them around. So they do often end up with something like 5k gold in at 1300AD, which is impossible to beat. The best one can achieve is around 4.5k with spawning two great merchants and sending them to europe, which is quite tight in time, requires castes and starving your pop in order to have more merchants.
The best results i had with only one great merch sent to europe. You can end up with 3.5k, which is often enough and you dont cripple your economy to much, which is important to get to the last uhv.

Thanks for the advice. It turns out that I have been playing an older version of RFC. Now I got the latest one (almost a year later). Some of the UHVs that were hard are now easier (China), but I cannot figure India now. I could do India every other time, but now with the slower research I cannot found Judaism before turn 40 and Yerosalim gets it around turn 35. What changed and what am I missing?

I don't know what you're missing, but it's possible that you aren't missing anything. Sometimes the balance does change a bit from version to version. I don't think every UHV gets playtested in every version.

So India is unplayable in this version? Sigh.... Well I really likes India, they just sit there peacefully and build and build. I guess I will have to wait till the next version to play again.

Yeah it was discussed after the last update. You can get Judaism by beelining it from the get-go and then you can go back and get Hinduism or Buddhism (I forget which this misses out)

The Indian UHV is very luck based initially - you need to beeline Judaism straight away which actually skips both Hinduism and Buddhism, and hope that both Jerusalem does not found Judaism. Also, the Greeks will beat you to Buddhism if they go straight for Priesthood so you need to hope they don't do that as well.

I did a bit of testing here - it seems there's maybe a 50-50 chance of founding Judaism before Jerusalem does. Interestingly I never had a problem founding Hinduism despite it being earlier than Buddhism - the other Ancient civs seem to give a very low priority to Meditation.

It's not just the ancient civs that ignore Meditation - most of the classical and middle ages ones do too.

If you play a civ that starts late, researching Meditation (cheap) and then trading it to others is always a good way to get open borders - without having to give up a really expensive tech.
