Since I'm getting bored and finding more vicarious pleasure out of Aelf and Sisiutil game threads, I thought I'd try something different: Monarch, Standard Pangaea, Raging Barbarians and Always War.

Wow.

Any thoughts on how to survive and prosper in this environment? I built a second city quickly, used the first to build the Great Wall and the second to spit out workers and military units, but . . . well the good news is that there wasn't any war weariness. :(

Perhaps this setting should be saved for Archipelago maps?

I've never tried it and I'm reluctant to. Like a lot of players, I rely heavily on that early, peaceful period with no barb units entering your borders.

Building the GW sounds intuitive at first, until you realize you might need those hammers for units instead, and fighting barbs will earn you valuable XPs. I'd probably be focusing exclusively on military units and techs (though not even bothering with barracks at first), fortifying a unit or two on every strategic resource, founding cities adjacent to said resources for easier defense thereof, and heavily escorting any and all workers and settlers. Even worker techs would wait--I mean, what's the point if your workers are at risk and the tiles will just get pillaged anyway?

Take a look at Challenge #6: Ironman

monarch should be way easier though. Just get a nice defencive line and expand behind it. Remember to fogbust your backyard ofc.
