Strokes of bad luck.....

On my current game I got beaten to literally every single wonder I tried to build. Great wall, oracle, great library, apostolic palace, sankore, spiral minaret... all those races ended in failure. Oracle and Sankore were particularly disheartening because I was bloody CLOSE to getting them.

A rush to optics and a caravel streaking across the sea revealed Qin, with marble in the fat cross of his capital and stone in the inner ring of one of his early cities.

What a pain... this is Emperor + Agg AI, and he's protective, so invading him from across an ocean and taking his wonders would be extremely hard to boot.

Argh yeah this reminds me of the time when I wanted to steal Rifling from my neighbor with a 73% chance and it failed seven times! The probability for that is on a scale of 10^-4 (1/10000)

there are some pretty bad ones here, my worst was probably bringing ten city raider axes to take a 20% culture city defended by two archers. first four axes died without causing damage. then the next four died and the archers were still at low health. the final two attacks were with city raider 2 axes at odds of about 95% each. needless to say, they both died and when i returned i found two archers with 5 promotions each. bummer dude.

 That's all there's to say.

I wonder if there's some sort of a correlation between the (im)probabability of the event and the number of obscenities shouted at the monitor.

Definitely

If you want to know it exactly, I'd try to fit it to an exponential function
