Stuck in the tutorial...

Hi, thanks for your links to the tutorials in the threads and even the movies in YouTube to help newbies like me out. At 36 I discovered Civ recently and better late than never! I still try to play the tutorial of Civ IV on the dvd as well. I already get stuck after beating the lion, when Sid orders me to go back to the city. So i follow the man's order, go to the city (this takes me three turns), but then I just stand there, with no new guidance

And another question from this late newbie, does anybody know how to save progress in the tutorial? Because when I press Esc I get the menu, but no possibility to save. I've tried it several times but I just don't get it

My advice is to forget about the tutorial, it's really not very good. Just jump into the game at the lowest setting and get used to things that way. At that setting the game is very easy to win so you won't feel too challenged by it. Once you get a decent handle on the mechanics then you can start increasing the difficulty. Any questions you may have as you go along can be answered here in the forum. There's a lot of people here who are more than happy to help a newbie out. Also, make good use of the manual and the ingame Civilopedia. You can access that by hitting your F12 key. It contains a great deal of information about the game.

Ignore Willem. The tutorial is there teach you the basis of the game. It wont help you get better. If you DO NOT KNOW how to play Civ 4, then you should play the tutorial two, four maybe six times before jumping into the game.

Without the tutorial, it would be impossible to learn how Civ works.

I've never done the tutorial, but from most of what I hear, it does not help. As Willem said, the manual will explain most of the game and you can easily figure most of the rest out by playing a few normal games on settler. Any questions that you might have about the game have probably already been asked so check the FAQ or search the forums for answers.

That's an absurd statement. No game is impossible to learn without doing the tutorial if you set your mind to it. The one for Civ is so basic you can easily do without it, it really doesn't explain anything you can't figure out from both the manual and Civilopedia. And of course coming here.

Ok, allways good to talk about playing the tutorial or not. But can anyone answer my two questions or be so kind to play it, takes about 5 minutes before you have to defeat the lion, get back to the city to defend it and then...nothing for me, no reactions from Sid. Thanks guys

I thought i was tough and played my first game without the tut. At the end of the game, i had like 3 cities, all at a low pop. I declared war (not checking diplo) with an army of 10 SAMs, 2 marines, and 2 siege weapons. Try the tut.

Not impossible, just much harder.

It helped me greatly.


Just play the whole way through, the tut only takes about 30 minutes to an hour until Sid lets you loose on the world.

Being an experienced Civ player, I too became "stuck" in the tutorial when I tried it! Quite ironically enough, heheh. So I said "Screw it" Read the manual and played a few games on Noble difficulty.

After he gets back to the city just fortify him there (press CTRL-F or click the button with the shield and swords). It is best to garrison units in your cities because at a certain size(I think it's 4) they will get unhappy if you don't "defend them". Oddly enough, a warrior still counts as defense even into the modern age. It will also give bonus happiness with the hereditary rule civic later in the game.

I'm not sure about the saving question. If the option isn't in the menu you can try CTRL-S to save it. Saving might be disabled in the Tutorial, I don't know.

Fact: I started to play Civ 4 THREE YEARS before I started to come here. Civ I and II much before that.

I'm not certain, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that BTS broke the tutorial.

But anyway, don't worry about it. Much easier just to start a game on Settler and play around. See what happens when you do things. You'll pick up the basics pretty quickly.

Not sure if this will take care of it for you or not, but when it tells you to click on the city for the City screen, you need to double click on the square the city is in, not the city name. While both will bring up the City screen, only clicking on the square gets a resonse from Sid.

Read the War Room tutorials. You don't need the tutorial. The first game I played was a peaceful Duel/Arch., playing as America against the Dutch.

Then, I read the articles on this site, and began learning much more.

Read this walkthrough about the game, it will help you a lot to understand the basic idea of the game: Sulla's Civilization IV Walkthrough. There will still be a lot of room for improvement to your game after that, but it is good to have a starting idea about how this game works and what are some goals for your civilisation.

Oh, and ask simple questions in the Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions thread. It was made for it.

I read every walkthrough in this site, and I found no help beating Noble. I have finally posted Youtube videos for you to critisize to find out what I'm doing wrong. I will edit a post to find out where.

Read the manual first, after that the tutorial is really not necessary. The first two levels are real easy - I played the tutorial once, the settler once, and the chieftain once. Those levels are easy enough to win just by doing what the computer tells you to do. Warlord is a bit trickier. Noble is really hard - still haven't beat it, and I've been playing the game for at least a year. When you reach that level, you need to visit this site.
