But I didn't see a general questions thread:

I'm just DL'ing the newest version of FFH2 from this website and wondering if that's all good, or if I need to install patch J as well? I have BtS 3.19 installed.

The usual way it works is you download the newest version and then put whatever the most recent Letter patch is on top of that. You might also want to install the media pack too.

However...

The AI was being upgraded in recent patches and while its received a lot of improvements, theres a lot of things its a bit eccentric on. Kaels currently busy with grandkids so its not being worked on. You might be better seeing if you can dig out patches D or G as they were good points in recent development.

hmmm... Is that maybe a suggestion for the most 'playable' version then, D or G? I've greatly enjoyed FFH2 but my last few games over the past few months with J haven't been nearlyas much fun - seems the AI forgot how to build boats, but just spams units... is this perhaps a patch issue?

I'm not sure if he plans to update again in the future.

When playing with this you should go closer to your Civ4 difficulty level. Monarch AI was able to just about keep up with me in tech.

Argh this is all so confusing, I think I will just install patch J and be done with it. It seems like I have to install a mod of a mod of a mod to make it work.

just install FFH and the latest patch (which can be found in the first post of the Bug thread) and you will be fine. If you play the scenarios I suggest you use my unofficial patch, which fixes a serious issue with the always war gameoption that many scenarios use.
