Yes combat mission is good source of skins and offten high quality
but personally i like doing textures from draws with different vieports
here's example of 512x512 texture:
this nice drawings comes from book about stugs

but many you may find just googling
i cut them out from the scan tweaked a little bit (changed contrast, corrected quality of the scan, deleted muzzle in top view and so on) and resized to 512x512
note there's also other part of texture with tracks - just the copy paste fragmnet of front draw.
There's also two squares one light and one dark (i painted it myself) - i use them to finish small fragments, like muzzle, or fragments partially hiden - inside this squares near muzzle.
And what i than do is UVW unwrap, select polygons (for example from the left vieport), planar (it's i think Y axis) and edit, but probalby you know this method (maybe someone other could find this method handy) - it may be tough in the beginning but it gives the best results
