Are we allowed to give cities other names than they are given by the game? The MGE team does that. I think it'd be nice, that way we have some more of ourselves in the game, and it's great fun when the city of Foxtrot is destroyed! (nothing personal FT, just as much fun when the city of Willemvanoranje is conquered). I'll name mine Kevin Falls or something, maybe New Amsterdam or Driemond (that's the neighboorhoud I live, ther's an interesting story why it's called that way. I'll save that for after my next 15 turns)

Kevin Falls could be named after me as well.

Great update from all involved. Let's hope we can get to Philosophy before anyone else. Hope we get Sun Tzu's as well as it looks like we'll have to TAKE some cities and wonders.

Glad we made it off the island!!!

I'll be back from New Orleans on Monday night - looks like I won't delay anything.

Gotta go - room service is here.

I had thought of naming a city after myself but then decided that it would probably create confusion. I think it would be most disturbing to go looking for London and then discover the name Foxtrot
smile.gif
. I think if we build a new city THEN we should be able to name it what we like. But probably only one city per player. What does everybody think???
P.S. No disbanding other guys pet cities!!!

[This message has been edited by Håkan Eriksson (edited March 19, 2001).]

It was March the 18th, the football club Ajax Amsterdam celebrated its 101st birthday with a huge victory of 9-0 (!) against Sparta Rotterdam. On that day, the power of the English monarchy was transfered, as our customs say, from Hakan II, to the new king, Kevin III. It was a glorious day, and the begin of a new era in English history.

A.D. 300
The first act of Kevin III as a king, was the order he gave to the new settlers who were completed in Warwick. It started working on irrigations, so the land around Warwick will produce more food. A diplomat walked into a small village. The inhabitants don't want to be discovered and moved, but not fast enough to prevent the diplomat seeing the greatness of 'the Wheel'. Triremes continue to discover new parts of isdlands and oceans, in order to search for good spots for new cities.

A.D. 320
The kings heart is filled with pain, when he hears that the Persians have completed their (King Richard's) Crusade in Persopolis. Settlers continue to build irrigations, and ships detect some land to the south.

A.D. 340
Our brave navy discovers an island, south of the island of Dover. Spies report that the Zulu government is overthrown. The king wants to know how many people are living in his country, and such a joy! The English Empire has more than 1,000,000 cititzens! The king plans a large celebration in London.

A.D. 360
Disturbing messages come from travellers from overseas. They report the Mongols have started working on a great project: Copernicus's Observatory. Fishingboats from Dover are missing. What could have happened?

A.D. 380
Barbarians land near Dover. The king can't send any troops, for his armies are needed to defend the other cities. Kevin III and his priests pray for the citizens of Dover, but will it be enough? A caravan lands on a small island in the south, hoping the inhabitants want to trade, but surprised he is! Not by barbarians, but by the damiration these people have for our nation. They deside to join our empire. The city of Brighton is found.

A.D. 400
Once again, the heart of Kevin III is filled with pain and sorrow. A bad message comes from survivors of the disaster of Dover. Civil defences were overrun by well trained and skilled barbarian legions. Half of the population died, the other left and went to the mountains. Dover is now habited by barbarians. Councilors advice the king not to start any rescue actions.
A road from Waerwick to London is almost complete. Settlers have started working on th last part. New irrigation projects are started near Oxford and Newcastle. Once again, land is detected, this time south of Brighton.
A small and quiet celebration is held in Driemond Palace in London, to honour the fact that Kevin III reigns for a 100 years already.

A.D. 420
This is the year, Canterbury completes its library. Citizens are happy, as they can learn to read and read all the stories and tales of Englands long and glorious history. Another island was found, could there be civilized people on this one? A new trireme is completed in Newcastle.

A.D. 440
A brave trireme captain desides to leave the coast and get deaper in to the ocean, and he survives it! A new island is found to the north. The trireme in Newcastle, still has to wait for settlers to board.

A.D. 460
The road from Warwick to London is completed Trade between the two cities increases. The settlers that worked on this road, are heading for the hills of London, so they can built mines to increase productivity in London. The irrigationproject near York is completed. The island of Brighton brings more surprises. A group of elephants and their owners join the ranks of our glorious army. They are detached to Brighton, as a temporary defence.

A.D. 480
The trireme in Newcastle finally departs from the seaport/harbour. A settler unit has boarded the ship, and is heading together with the trireme to the south, so they can found a new city on a new island. Coventry completes its marketplace, and starts working on a library. Settlers land on the new island to the north of Main England.

A.D. 500
A national celebration! Kevin III reigns for 200 years! People are sad after the party, becausse they realise, Kevin III’s reign won’t last for very long. A new city is found on the island to the north. It’s called Kevin City, for the honour of the aging king.

A.D. 520
A joy fills the heart of the old reigner, when he sees the Great Library in London is finished! Knowledge from all over the world has been gathered by traders and explorers for many years, and have been brought to London. The trireme continues to explore the coast of the island of Kevin City. A third island is dicovered to the south of Brighton. Could this one be larger than the other two? The Egyptians are willing to trade their maps with us, and one of the great questions is answered: there is a civilization to the south.

A.D. 540
Warwick completes its granary. The mayor thinks growth will go twice as fast, now. A new project is started in Warwick, people started building a library. Our nation discovers Feudalism, and starts researching philosophy, so they one day can get to Monotheism. Irrigation projects are started near Kevin City, by the inhabitants of the island, that were willing to join our empire. Land is detected south of Coventry.

A.D. 560
A trireme discovers irrigations and roads on the newly discovered island south of Coventry. So its habited, but who are they? The mines of London are cmpleted, and production is almost doubled.

A.D. 580
The trireme discovers a Persian fortress on the island. A Persian diplomat comes to meet with Kevin III. The Persians receive the Republic and the English receive Engeneering. Kevin III hopes that the invention-discovery will be much closer, now. Hasting completes a harbor, and starts working on a trireme. Kevin III orders the trireme near the Persian coast to sail south, amonfg the Persian coast until they find a fien spot for a new colony. An old but for his age healthy king, writes down his final wishes. The islands near Brighton must be colonized, and they will be called the Ajax Islands from now, to honour the great result of the 18th of March, the day Ajax beat Sparta with 9-0. The island of Kevin City, shall be called New Holland from this moment. By the customs of the English people, the old and dieing king, hands over the crown to the next king, Kevin IV. Kevin III dies in London, whole England mourned for two months. His body was burried in London, in the newly build church, called Westerkerk, this church has the largest tower of all the churches in England; the Westertower is 189 meters high. Kevin III will never be forgotten.
The Age of Exploration will continue with a new king. The age of Kevin IV is about to start.

------------------
Concordia res parvae cres****.

And so it was that Kevin IV assumed the throne of the English empire. But lo, he was dismayed. He took little heart that his fine people could only muster the efforts to bring a mere two achievements to his homeland considered glorious enough to be considered true Wonders of the World. But Kevin IV was a wise king and he decided to make the best use possible from the Great Library and the Embassy named for famed traveler Marco Polo.

Kevin looked about his cities and discovered a likely reason as to why his people were well behind in the area of glorious Wonders. It would seem that his people were not building any. A new philosophy was born with Kevin, and he immediately set two cities to building what his wise men were touting as an “Oracle”. Farsighted king that he was, Kevin IV realized that even if his people had to be taken from this project they would have something upon which they could build an even more glorious treasure. As the neighboring English cities completed infrastructure building, it was deemed that they should all build caravans to bring needed supplies to these cities building wonders.

A new philosophy too was being instituted regarding growth. “Why are my people irrigating the land about them when there are new and unsettled worlds to be found? Call back the ships that have ventured to the ends of the earth and have them take these people to claim the land in the name of the English – if we don’t our rivals surely will.”

Following is a brief timeline as to the exploits and achievements of King Kevin IV of England.

600 A.D.
Kevin calls upon his emissaries and meets with them at Marco Polo’s Embassy. His connections to the Egyptians tell of a very scholarly people with knowledge that could greatly benefit the land. The English trade iron working, the wheel, trade, and construction for Astronomy, Philosophy, University and Medicine. The king decides that the Zulu’s Chivalry and the Persian Bridge Building are something his scholars in the Great Library will likely discover soon in any case. Peace is made with the Mongols while the Celts decide to carry on as they try to figure out that there are many gods that need to be worshipped (Duh).

Discovering philosophy catches our wise men in the early stages of study, but they parlay this knowledge and attempt to discover invention. It would seem, however, that it will take several years to accomplish this – very likely not in the good king’s lifetime.

Ships begin heading back to the mainland to get the 4 settlers that are there. The one ship with a settler in it already heads toward the site that used to be Dover - now in barbarian hands. A ship with a caravan heads for London to help with wonder building and a ship with a diplomat heads to Dover with something in mind.

620
A caravan near Kevin City – named for the good king’s predecessor, finds a village and with much trepidation decides to enter. The villagers there tell of there being one God in the universe where most think there are many. This enlightened idea reaches London and Monotheism is now the reigning theological doctrine. The heretical Oracle in London is scrapped for the glory of a chapel bound to inspire the whole of the English Kingdom. In turn, the Oracle in Coventry is scrapped for a Grand Theatre in hopes to keep the citizens there happy for all time.

The ship with the settler reaches Egyptian shores and witnesses a barbarian attack upon Thebes. The attack is repelled, and the barbarian leader heads to the very coastline where our ship has anchored for a rest. They decide to teach these aggressive people a lesson and hope to build solidarity with the Egyptians as well.

St Augustine, in all his wisdom, related to the world the level of advancement of every civilization, and the mighty English were the very top of the list. Closely followed by the Egyptians, the king sneered at the lowly Celts and hopeless Persians. Perhaps they should be absorbed into the English civilization soon before they hurt themselves. Indeed, it is announced the Celts and the Zulus are at war and not too many bets are placed on the Celts. Especially as in this year the Zulus build Sun Tzu’s War Academy.

640
Our ship captures the barbarian king and ransom him for 150 much needed gold. Newer cities such as Brighton and Kevin City are building pikemen and then producing settlers. Mainland cities are still building some improvements, but they are all changing to either a wonder or a caravan. King Kevin is sick of seeing wonders built everywhere else.

The ship with the caravan passes a hut. It is thought better if the diplomat speaks with the villagers in case they are hostile.

The ship near Kevin City is closer to the mainland, and the other ships are closer as well.

680
Most events in this year are overshadowed by the diplomat’s discovery from speaking with simple villagers. The villagers are quite organized and agree to become a city under the English rule called Leeds. This is both good and bad news from the standpoint of the English. Good in that we have a foothold onto the Egyptian mainland where all of their cities are (all 6). This will give us the means to take technology if we deem it necessary and perhaps take by force the wonders that they have built. It will, however, also give the Egyptians a target to make forays into our own technology. Best to have plenty of diplomats in this city. The diplomat boards the ship again and heads to Dover.

700
The barbarian held city of Dover revolts for 52 gold giving us a legion as well. However, the king deems that the city site would be better if it was built further south and the size 1 city begins to build a settler. The legion is loaded on the ship and will be taken to Leeds to get support there. In this way, we will not lose them when Dover disbands. This will provide some defense for Leeds as well, and production there is changed to a diplomat. The ship with the settler is close to a decent city site.

720
Two settlers on the mainland board a ship and head out to Kevin City where there may be some great new sites to settle. Travel is slow as the Mongols discover Magellan’s Voyage and without the lighthouse coastal travel is a must. Egypt discovers Banking and were would like to get it from them.

740
As expected, our own scholars have discovered Bridge Building via the Great Library. In this year, a caravan also reaches London to help with the Chapel. Caravans are nearing completion all over the land and the citizens are certainly in need as uprisings are occurring with greater frequency.

It was discovered that there was a lone barbarian legion that was not destroyed when Dover was retaken, and our new legion is being taken by ship to intercept before they can reach the city.

760
The two settlers taken by ship reach coast safely and head toward Kevin City. The Legion is dropped near the barbarians and the next move will be theirs. The ship with the caravan drops it on the mainland and will wait for settlers to take them elsewhere.

780
Settlers arrive in Kevin City and the empty ship heads to get the caravan that was in this area. The barbarians run from our legion, but we are in pursuit and the empty ship heads to pick up the elephant mounted troops in a nearby English City.

800
The city of Kev IV is built above Dover as it is now safe to do so. Nearly 200 years into Kevin IV’s reign, Kev IV will be well known as a whaling community and be a very productive coastal city. We hope to see many more cities erected.

820
Our scholars have discovered Navigation via the Great Library. King Kevin IV is pleased and hopes that soon there will be caravels roaming the seas soon. Word is that the Mongols and the Persians have made an alliance – what will this bode for the future?

Many caravans are heading toward London.

840
Settlers near Kevin City found a great city site and plan to build soon. The barbarians have made a fatal tactical movement error, and our own legion attacks swiftly. Although BADLY wounded, they do prevail and remain where there are in an effort to rebuild strength. The ship with the elephant lands briefly at Leeds to give them some defense and then heads to pick up the legion as well. Diplomats are commissioned in Leeds and they set out to touch base with some of the Egyptians. The Egyptians discover Economics and begin talks with Adam Smith. Need to nip that one in the bud if you will.

860
The city of Birmingham is built near Kevin City and the pheasant hunting in the nearby forest is considered the best. No less than three caravans are outside London, but all is not good as word reaches us that the Germans of all people have built a Grand Theatre and (perhaps as a taunt) named it after one of own citizens. Theatre building in Coventry is changed to a Chapel as well, but that could change with the discovery of Economics or Invention.

The aggressive Zulus have captured the Mongolian city of Bokhara. Where will they strike next, and will we be ready if need be?

880
The final year of Kevin IV’s rule. The city of Richmond is founded and there are several settlers near some additional promising sites as well. London is only 46 shields away from completing its chapel and it could not come at a better time.

As Kevin looked back at his 280-year rule, he was more than just amazed that he had lived that long. He was very happy as to the new road his people were taking. There was much to be built with wonders and new cities alike, and his only regret was that he did not see the great chapel finished. Perhaps, he also thought, it would have been better to have 3 or more cities building wonders, but that is now hindsight. With the two he has now, the many, many caravans will surely give them the edge. His only hope now was that his successor would carry on the fine traditions.

A final note – here is a quick list of things to keep an eye out for:

- Leeds is going to be tough to keep the Egyptians away from so keep that in mind.
- I meant to try to trade for Banking and Economics but never did. I think the Egyptians still need stuff that we have. of course, we do have a dip nearby.
- The amount of turns for discovery is now like 30 or so. Don’t know if it’s too early for the Republic even with the Chapel, but I had to trade for what I could to get us back in the race.
- Honestly, if we find ourselves having to be militaristic (as I think we will soon) then perhaps Republic is not the way to go anyway.
- I almost built with a settler near Kevin City before I realized it was a wandering nomad. Watch for that one.
- Our money situation is just running even with all of the improvements. We need that Adam Smith deal soon.
- We can't forget to disband Dover. Moving it one square south we can make use of both a fish and whale resource.

That’s it. Hope all goes well with you Thunderfall and I look forward to hearing your exploits.

Just A bit off-topic but...

You guys are soon going to start a new succesion game??
I really want to join than to!!

it's Still Mp only It doesn't cost much time (I quess because 10 / 15 turn don't take long) And it is just great for me due to not much time!!

If you want you can contackt me at icq: 66404262

-----------------

Your are not a prey until a predator knows of your existence.

Could the player who has it now, please send the map to me (make a screenshot). I'm going to give all our islands names. You can claim them (or parts of the islands) if you have discovered them. AS FOR NOW, I AM THE CARTOGRAPHER OF THE CLASSIC TEAM. Send your claims by e-mail to me, please, and describe your island well.

Thunderfall, will you be the one to create a book of our great history? Everyone, post updates on your reign!

Another thing. Everyone should choose a nickname for your king. You normally are just Kevin III, or whatever your first name is, combined with the times you played your turns. Besides that, you can choose another name, so it'll be XXX 'the Great', or XXX 'the Wise' or XXX 'the Thunderfall'. Agreed?

Hakan!!!! You are being way too modest
smile.gif

!!!

I will let my next reign judge me...

But I think it will be something like "Carl der Grossartig!!!"

Hakan, ever heard of Gothenburg, Nebraska???
Supposed to be a sister city or something from Goteburg. Anyway it is where I grew up and we heard alot about Sweden there.

------------------
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at THAT man.

Tough to come up with nicknames ahead of the game. With each turn that I get, my style of play will likely be different. With my first two reigns, I would say my first one could be Kev II "The Long-Living" (lots of years) My second one could be Kev IV "The Chapel Builder". Given possible circumstances, other titles could include:
The Zulu-Stomper
The Mongol-Biter
The Celt-Grater
The Spider-Stinger
The Wonder-Taker
The Not-As-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot
The City-Buyer
The Nuke-Daddy
The-Howitzer-Building-@$$-Kicking-No-Mercy-Giving-Steamroller-Land-Taking-King

So you see, it'll be more accurate to give the names post-reign.

As far as claims - I'll take the little island that has Kev IV on it since I liberated Dover and built the other city on that island as well.

BTW, Thunderfall should have the map as of now so he would be the one to send a screen shot. Hope all goes well with you, Thunderfall!

Acctually I have heard of it. Not very much tho just that it supossed to be a city somewere in USA that is named Gothemburg to. I guess it's not a myth like some people here in Gothemburg (Sweden) seems to think.

And I claim (no I demand) to have the island were I built the city of Nosskire (as the first city ever build outside our main island). I think it should be called The island of Eriksson or something.

Bye the way, what do we call the main island?
