I just bought Civ 4 last week, and I have never played a Civilization game before... but I am already hooked. So what I want to know are various opinions about mods that I should check out.

First and foremost, I would like to get something that improves AI, and maybe some stuff that spruces up the interface. I have already downloaded Blue Marble, and it's nice.

Suggestions about various modpacks are welcome, and I plan on trying out Rise of Empires sometime soon.

Also, I have already constructed my own little mod. I felt the scale of unites was too big (they look like giants), so I reduced all unit sizes to 65%.

Thank you for your input.

Maybe you like mine. :) Check the Community Civ V. It includes BBAI for smarter AI, BUG for better interface and some Blue Marbel art for better terrain style. And the units are also scaled different. Especially the ships.

And of course their is also a lot of other stuff. But most of it is optional. So you can run it or not. Here is the link to the download threat and a list of the included main mods.

If you want something a bit more minimalist, with just interface and AI improvements, try out the Better BUG AI mod.

Since the posters above have only covered mods that are adding to the base game, let me suggest some more "total conversions", that change a lot more:

If you like historic scenario mods, you should give World War II 1939 a try, great for "what-ifs". History of Three Kingdoms is also a nice, though underrated mod out there. Both are also visually amazing, great atmosphere and feel, if you care for that sort of thing.

If you're willing to venture out of the historic scenarios, you *have* to try Fall from Heaven 2 - not only a great fantasy mod, it's also very interesting in terms of gameplay (very different civilisations, hero units, spells, etc.). If Sci-Fi is to your taste, giving Planetfall and Dune Wars is worthwhile, too.

Cheers, LT.

No listing of great mods can be complete without the mods listed by Lord Tirian and Jarlaxe Baenre. When you're ready to try something different, give them all a try.

But yeah, Better Beyond the Sword AI (BBAI) is a big boost to the AI of any mod that uses it. BUG is also recommended by a lot of people, but frankly I can take it or leave it. Some people can't live without it though.

If all you want is to improve the base Civ 4 experience, BUG and BBAI are good places to start. If you want to try both of them, go with Better BUG AI like Afforess suggests.
