I recently got Civ 4, and after having some fun learning it, it's starting to become impossible for me to keep interest in my games past 1000 AD. I'm pretty sure it has to do with my choice of settings. The first thing I know I need to do is move up to Monarch (once I got used to the game I stomped Noble and Prince). I tried a few on Standard / Continents, but I quickly realized I don't like building boat after boat sending stuff overseas. I then tried Small / Lakes (both were on Temperate or whatever the default setting is). This was good at first, but having only 4 or 5 other AIs to play against was pretty dull. It was also disappointing that I couldn't strategically place cities to block areas off for future expansion since it's all one big landmass.

It would be cool if you could let me know what you guys like to play on. Hopefully I will see something that looks interesting :).

If you tell us what parts of the game you find interesting, it might be easier to suggest settings that maximise those features. :)

Haven't tried it myself but I know a lot of people like playing Highlands, and if you want to block areas off that should be possible with all the mountain ranges.

It won't help with your aversion to boating, but an archipalego map set on snaky continents provides tons of chokepoints. It's become one of my favorite maps to play on.

Or mix it up with a quick game on a duel sized pangea map with 18 civs. That gets interesting!
