+3 research on mages guilds

When you think of mages and old wizards and things like that, you also think of them learning new spells and gaining knowledge, what better way to reflect that then by adding research bonuses to the magic line? or at least the arcane trait.

while it would be logical i think that arcane is already one of the best traits so i dont really see the point of giving it another bonus

Yeah, Arcane ist definetely the bomb. Other Traits like Defender should be improved.

Defender should grant Defensive as well imo, and maybe have a % culture boost, it's the weakest trait. For some reason though, I think the team might have future plans for the trait since they haven't done anything special to it despite the complaints.

My suggestion for the Defender trait is to keep its present benefits, and add:

1. +1 Happy for Walls and Archery Ranges.
2. Free Drill I & City Garrison I promo for Archery units.

While these benefits will help a human player a little, they should help the AI significantly since the AI likes building Walls, Archery Ranges, and Archers already and so no tweaks would be needed to the AI. The AI would be rewarded for doing what it usually does anyway.

As for Arcane, the idea to give a research bonus to it is a good one, and makes sense flavorwise. Can't comment on it from a balance POV since I have not played much with the Arcane trait yet.

It makes sense from a flavor point of view, but Arcane is already a strong trait. Is this suggestion based purely on flavor, or do you think the trait could use a boost?

Arcane is a bad trait. How exactly is it good? It gives an experience bonus to a small sliver of the buildable units... a sliver that doesn't tend to get much better when you have more of them.

Not that I'm argreeing with these changes per se, but seriously, it's such a niche trait that I feel just combining it with Summoning would be the smarter idea.

I think a lot of people think it's powerful because you can churn out mages directly with the right bonus XP (build adept; immediately upgrade).

I'd agree with you though Zechnophobe. The arcane trait seems VERY boring to me. As does Summoner (though I agree that summoner is also very powerful). Something to add a balanced flavour to these traits would be good!

But you can do that with a non-Arcane leader. As Capria of the Bannor, I was producing 10 exp Adepts with Command Post + Form of the Titan + (Theocracy, Apprenticeship and Conquest). It's just easier with the Ammurites since you get the Cave of Ancestors as well.

Perhaps you mean the increased exp gain and free promo of Arcane? That does not seem overpowered, not compared to Raider, which gives bonus exp, Commando, and +100% gold bonus for pillaging.

I agree :)

I'm just trying to justify why people love this trait so much. I seriously think it needs more work just for flavour purposes :)

Okay, got it. The more I think about it, the more I think it needs something like +2 Research from Mages Guilds, and perhaps a build bonus on Alchemy Labs. Perhaps Arcane leaders could run Scholarship for free or half cost. (Just throwing things out there ... but without having to add new promos or buildings.)
