SUL5a - Competing Succession Game Teams

@Wetterlind

How about beat up, kill, crush, rip to shreds? Do you get the idea?

Lee is right on ;). The Cavs are knocking on the door and the rail net is almost complete. I would've started the war earlier but we still had 6 turns of peace to wait through :).

I will not declare but will have some more troops ready for your command, gold for you to spend, as well as many factories, universal sufferage, and Magellen's (to make transport even faster). I also have a city picked out for ToE.

Sul5a from 1415 AD

1415AD (0): wow are we rich. I will probably go on a spending spree. Check things out and decide to reduce lux to 0% and look where to spend our money. That increases gpt to over 700.

Hurry courthouse in Tarsus for 216 gold. Change Mpondo to courthouse. Change Sardis to courthouse. Rush market in zimbabwe for 368 gold.

1420 AD (1): Zimbabwe builds market start cavalry. Persepolis builds courthouse starts cavalry. Ulundi, courthouse starts cavalry. Veii aqueduct, starts marketplace. York builds worker, starts worker. Newton's completes, start university. Hastings completes worker starts Magellan's voyage. Canterbury completes worker start cavalry. Warwick builds worker starts cavalry. Newcastle builds worker start Man o war. Tarsus builds court starts cavalry. Brighton builds cathedral starts galleon. Leed builds worker start another. Bactra builds temple start worker. Sardis builds courthouse starts marketplace. Hurry courthouse in Mpondo for 294 gold.
We still have 6 turns of peace with Russia, they give us 19 gpt for 6 more turns of peace.

1425 AD (2): Learn medicine start industrialization due in 4 with +560, York builds worker starts bank. Susa market start courthouse. Leed builds worker starts cavalry. Mpondo builds courthouse start harbor. Start moving more troops to outside of Russia. The rails continue will get to London to help leos along. Trade Cleo, saltpeter, gems and 400 gold for ROP and Silks. Unload 3 galleons on Egypt soil.

1430 AD (3): Iron Works completes in Oxford, start palace prebuild for Sufferage. The rails continue.

1435 AD (4): Cumae builds market starts library. Coventry builds bank starts cavalry. NO WAYYYY??!!!! Russia completes Leos in Moscow, now thats it they have to go down. Leos was 13 turns away in London with nothing to swap to we will have one real expensive collesseum. darn factories are still 2 turns away. Ships return to Mpondo. The colleseum only wasted 78 shields.

1440 AD (5): London builds colosseum, starts cavalry. Hlobane finishes bank start cavalry. Arbela courthouse, starts cavalry. Isandhlwana builds courthouse starts market. Warwick builds cavs start another. Newcastle builds MOW start galleon. Rush harbor in Mpondo for 200 gold. Hurry bank in Ngome for 280 gold. Hurry courthouse in Tyre for 88 gold. Hurry courthouse in Samaria for 288 gold. Hurry susa courthouse for 176 gold.

1445 AD (6): Learn Industrialization start Electricity. Persepolis finished cavs start factory. Bapedi finished market start factory. Susa court start factory. Cantebury cavs start Factory. Intombe finishes university start factory. Tarsus cavs start factory. Brighton Galleon start factory. Leeds cavs start factory. Mpondo finishes harbor starts aqueduct. Ngome finishes bank start factory. Tyre court start aqueduct. Samaria finishes court start worker. The rail net continues, moving the cavs to Mpondo for loading on galleons, upgrade to ships to galleon. Change Oxford to universal Sufferage. Change Norwich from universtity to factory. Change Gordium and Pasargadae to factories.

1450 AD (7): Zimbabwe builds cavs start another. Moving 7 more cavs toward Russia. Buy Printing Press from Monty for 300 gold.

1455 AD (8): Monty cancelles wines and ivory deal, I renew giving up dye, fur and magnetism. Forced to renew the spice deal with Iroquios for PP, Chemistry and 500 gold. London cavs start factory. Rome Bank start library. Nottingham university start factory. Newcastle, galleon start factory. Bactra worker start another. Samaria worker start another. Whole lota rails.

1460 aD (9): Warwick builds cavs starts factory. Sardis market starts library. Hurry factory at Nottingham for 828 gold, this will be the ToE site and possibly Hoover. Hurry London too for 828. More railroads. Electricity next turn with +947 gold [biggrin]. Began moving some muskets from our cities to Mpodo for transport to Russia, for all our new cities. Will need to replace the muskets at some point.

1465 AD (10): Darn, russia and Iroqois have signed an MPP. We have a few trades with Iroquios and attacking Russia will break those trades. Sulla if we attack Russia now is that a problem? Learn Electricity start Scientific Method. Because of the New MPP Russia must have gotten Nationalism on the era change and chose Iroquois as there Ally because they are clearly the weakest civ at this point. London builds Factory, start cavalry. Ulundi builds cavs starts marketplace. York builds Bank starts Factory. Nottingham builds factory and starts palace as place holder for ToE. Hlobane builds cav starts factory. Samaria builds worker starts another. SM in 4 with +793 gold.

We have 2834 in Gold, Plenty of factories underway, lots of cavs in on the russian boarder and a shipload of muskets to hold our new Russian cities.

The palace is a prebuild for either Hoover or ToE. Sufferage is due in 6, Magellens in 9 and Hoover and ToE are right around the corner. The only question is the attack on Russia, because of the MPP they now have with the Iroquois. The intent of attacking russia is not to break our deal with the Iroquois. Does intent count?

There is nothing wrong with attacking a civ that has a MPP. I'm not asking you to play by the Epics Honorable ruleset, just to avoid the exploits listed there. Don't worry about it; it's not like the Iroquois would be able to stop us anyway. :)

Also regarding the war with Russia... I hate to say "told you so", but that would be appropriate here. Didn't I say after the last few turns to attack "NOW", before Russia got rifles? Well you guys delayed for a few too many turns and now Cathy's got the things. Don't let that be a discouragement though; with our massive power base, we can easily destroy Russia with cavs against rifles. Just make sure to keep trading for luxuries and increase the lux rate if needed. Also, I notice that no one has rushed cultural buildings in cities that have size-1 culture levels. If we are gunning for a domination victory (and that seems the most likely outcome), then every tile counts equally. Antium, Hamadan, Sidon, Antioch... all these cities can grab more tiles by having a cultural building rushed there. Keep in mind that coastal (not sea or ocean) tiles count towards the domination limit as well, so don't neglect those coastal cities!

Don't get too excited over our massive commercial gpt. We are in a golden age after all; I expect that we'll be averaging around 300gpt when we come out of it. Hardly chump change, but it's not 700gpt either. We need more workers too; rather than spreading out the workers in little bunches at different cities, they should concentrate on railing ALL the workable tiles in one city at a time, starting with our wonder-producing and core cities, then spreading to the outlying areas. There's an awful lot of jungle tiles remaining as well.

And finally, building a Man O' War? :smoke: We've already triggered our golden age, and if we need to defend our transport ships we'll want to be using ironclads. (The Man O' War does not upgrade to anything). At least you only built one of them! :)

Wetterlind is up, Zarth on deck.

I knew the MoW would get a :smoke:, I never build frigites and never built a MoW before. Just interested in seeing how bad it really is as a UU. If you want to disband it go right ahead.

Hotrod

P.S. I was going to attack earlier but the gpt deal lasted almost through my entire turn. That I was sure was off the table. Thanks for clearing up the MPP deal :).

I did build some more workers and yes most are bunched together but I was really just trying to get a rail net from the core cities to Mpondo for galleon loading. That is complete so all those workers can be put on exactly what you said getting the core cities ready for hospitals and more growth.

I’m feeling blue today. Not even a good whooping of Russians made me any happier thus a very short report this time.

Inherited turn, 1465 AD:
I only did one thing: changed an entertainer in Readings to a tax collector.

Iroquois declare war on Aztecs. Interesting...

Turn 1, 1470 AD:
Coventry built cav, starts lib. Rushed temple in Sidon, Hamadan and Antium and a lib in Antioch. Declared war on Russia.

GA ended... :(

Egypt signs a pact with Aztecs and declares war on Iroquois. Russia is declaring war on the Egyptians.

Turn 2, 1475 AD:
Still +525gpt. Pretty good I think.

Lots of less happiness, which is not so good. Traded Cleo's silk and her world map for our dyes, furs, incense, horses, 327g (instead of iron) and our world map.

Krasnoyarsk is liberated!

Increases taxes to 4.5.1… now we're at +250gpt. Not as impressive anymore.

Turn 3, 1480 AD:
Liberated Novgorod - lost 4 cavs… among other things to a conscript rifleman.

Turn 4, 1485 AD:
...ooh, I can't choose! Sanitation - nationalism, nationalism - sanitation. Damn. Sullla: which would have been the correct choice here? I went for nationalism.

Aztecs built Magellan's. Switched Hastings to factory and loses 12 shields. Nottingham is switched to ToE (in 14).

Hurried a couple of factories (5 for 1000g). And a harbor in Krasnoyarsk.

Turn 5, 1490 AD:
Rostov and Astrakhan liberated and no military losses!

Turn 6, 1495 AD:
Tblisi liberated, one cav lost. Temple hurried in Novgorod.

Turn 7, 1500 AD:
Vladivostok liberated, no military losses.

Russians wants to talk. I say: no way!

Turn 8, 1505 AD:
We know nationalism. Starts sanitation. Hurried a temple in Krasnoyarsk.

Aztecs has captured a lot of Russian cities.

Iroquois and Aztecs signed peace.

Turn 9, 1510 AD:
Yakutsk and Smolensk liberated! No losses!

Turn 10, 1515 AD:
Liberated a well-defended Moskow, lost 3 cavs. Hurried a temple in Tblisi.

The cavs close to Sverdlovks should be enough to liberate that city. Then one turn of waiting while cavs heal and reinforcements arrive before taking the Russian capitol should do the trick. Then it’s the Aztecs that’s in trouble.

Nice progress! :goodjob: I'm at home at the moment and thus can't do a real critique of your turn, or even look at the game since I don't have Civ3 on this computer. Zarth, if you're burning to play feel free to do so, if not I'll take a look at the save file on Friday (late) night. :)

Comments: Overall a very well played out turn of warfare. We had overwhelming numbers with a technological edge, and they were used to good effect. In answer to your question of Sanitation vs. Nationalism, in most cases getting hospitals and being able to let your cities grow past size 12 makes Sanitation the better choice. However, in a situation like this one where we are about to finish the game in the next 15-30 turns, hospitals aren't going to be around long enough to make a real difference. Of course I could say the same thing about the benefits of Nationalism, but you get the idea. Nationalism was probably a better call, since it will let us draft conscripts out of our mainland cities to use for garrisoning captured cities over on the Russia/Aztec continent. In other words, don't build any defensive units for cities over there in the combat zone, just draft some units out of (happy) size 12 cities and ferry them over with the cavs.

I'm glad to see that resistance was quelled in each city before moving on to the next; this greatly reduces the chance for flips and allows us to rush cultural buildings in them. The one big :smoke: mark for this round is the inexplicable decision not to rush a cultural building immediately in every captured city. Remember, domination victory is by far the most likely goal of this game, and every tile counts equally. We want every city to jump to size 2 cutural borders ASAP, so that the game is won earlier. That means rushing a temple in EVERY city as soon as resistance is quelled in it. I fail to understand why some captured cities have temples and others do not - we've got 3300g in the bank, for crying out loud! :)

Nicely done overall. Keep in mind that ferrying some workers over to Russia/Aztec island to build a rail line that spans that continent (for reinforcement of units) would be a very good idea - and would certainly be smarter than creating a longer ferry trip for our transport ships. Russia will fall in the next few turns, and then we can honorably take the war to the Aztecs (who lack Nationalism... :hammer: ) Rush temples in all captured cities, and we will almost certainly hit the domination limit around 1600AD.

Zarth can now grab the game, followed by D-Tox.

Sorry Zarth, but your 48 hours are long up for the game. The game passes to D-Tox, unless you can post your turns before his "got it" message. Once the "got it" is posted, your missed turn will put down to too much Thanksgiving turkey. :)

EDIT: Or maybe not, didn't realize you don't live in the States.

I'm sorry for taking so long, but I had GOTM13 to finish. (conquest 2050AD with 9013 points).
I am able to post the report here within an hour.

0. 1515AD
I hurry some temples

1. 1520AD
The temples are finishes. Mapstat shows we need another 337 tiles to get domination.
We capture Kiev. We capture Sverlovsk. The Russians are destroyed!!! I hurry a temple in Sverdlovsk(after hurrying a worker first).

2. 1525AD
We start researching replacable parts and we capture Tonawanda.

3. 1530AD
moving units. We capture Grand river.

4. 1535AD
nothing interesting

5. 1540AD
moving units

6. 1545AD
A lot of cavalry's are now on the iroquois/egyptian continent. we are still 207 tiles from domination

7. 1550AD
We capture Niagara falls.

8. 1555AD
We capture Salamance and the Iroquois are gone.

9. 1560AD
We have a ROP with the egyptians so the next target is the aztecs.

10. 1565AD
Moving units

The next player can start killing the Aztecs. We need 156 more tiles untill domination. I guess this was my last turn in ths succession game.:(

Looks like another of my current SGs will end shortly. Lk30 just finished. And this game is in the bag. Can't wait to see how team B is doing!

I will definitely be looking to play another game soon!

Hotrod

Zarth, I'm glad you were able to get your turns in, but please post some kind of a message if you are going to do that again! I have no problem giving you more time to finish if it's needed, so long as you give me some kind of notice to that effect. If you say nothing for 4 days, I'm going to have to assume you aren't playng your turn. It's a somewhat moot point now, since the rotation is NOT going to get back to you again, but keep it in mind for future succession games you may be playing. And I can understand the desire to finish the GOTM, but each rotation does only go 10 turns and can be played pretty quickly. I hope you had fun hitting spacebar a couple hundred times milking your game.

This game is completely over. Domination will almost certainly be achieved on the next turn; there's nothing the Aztecs can do to stop us. My only concern is that there are far too many undefended cities in former Russia; we really should have one defender in every town to prevent just any unit from walking in and capturing them. I'm also somewhat frustrated by the continued lack of any kind of rail net in former Russia, which would have speeded up troop movements greatly. Why are we doing research on techs like Electronics that serve no purpose? The game will be over before we get to tanks, and there's really nothing new we can discover before we win by domination. I probably would have turned research off permanently as soon as we hit Replaceable Parts in order to rush more things. And some of our core cities are very poorly managed; Oxford, our Iron Works city, is getting 77 shields/turn and building 80-shield cavs while sitting at size 12 with +3 food. We are wasting 74 shields every other turns on those cavs; by mining ONE grassland tile, we could build them every turn out of Oxford. :smoke: Similar mismanagement applies to other cities.

Sure, all of this stuff is elementary now and doesn't make a difference, but I'm trying to point out that we always could have done a better job. I make plenty of mistakes myself when playing, and there's always room for improvement. So in other words, just because the game's in the bag is no reason to slack off. ;) Regardless, D-Tox is still up and should finish the game for us. Please post your "got it" message soon D-Tox, as it's been some time since I opened up the floor for your next turn. You will have the chance to both play the first and last turns if all goes according to plan.

Wetterlind, you can find Map Stat to download in the Creation and Customization forum of this website. I used to use it a lot, but eventually decided that its only real use was to prevent domination for milking runs and have since eschewed using it. Of course I can look at a map and see about how far away I am from domination without the tool, just due to experience, so I don't have much need for it. When learning the game, it can be quite helpful.

I concur with Wetterlind. D-Tox, you have had more than 48 hours to finish. By rule I'm going to have to skip you to keep the game moving; archer_007 is up now. If D-Tox posts his summary before archer's "got it" post we will count his turns, but once archer_007 posts a "got it" message it won't matter even if D-Tox completed 10 turns. (Understand that?) Frankly I'm kind of surprised that the progress has been so slow with the game on its very last legs. Doesn't everyone want to finish this game so we can find out how the other team is doing? I guess that there's just not much enthusiam right now... :o
