Does it only increase effect of farms?
Or does it activate farms?

IIRC, I believe it activates the Farm bonus. Before that, I think Farms are basically what you might call "nice-looking Irrigation" ;)

Thats correct. Farms don't actually do anything until you have a supermarket built in the city.

Farmland is double-irrigated grass or plains terrain. It gets an extra +1 food only if the city has a SuperMarket. After building a Supermarket you automatically get +1 food for the center city square, without double-irrigating it (just like you automatically get a RR in the city square when you discover RR).

Having all that farmland, looks better than all those railroads in Civ 1 or Civ 3 though...

Isn't it 50% more food? A square's production is rounded down in Civ2, therefore 50% of 3 is 1.

At least the manual says it's a 50% increase.

It's 50%. Irrigating desert increases food from 0 to 1. Double irrigating desert still yields only 1 food. The 50% is added to 1 which is then immediately rounded down to 1 again. Of course that doesn't stop the AI from doing it.

You are correct that technically it is +50%, which is only noticeable for special tiles that have more than 2 food (Wheat, Oasis, MuskOx) and can be irrigated (Pheasant and Spice have 3, and Fruit has 4, but irrigation changes them to Plains and Grass). In testing this I discovered you can double-irrigate Tundra and Hills, but you need to start with 4 food (3+1 for first irrigation) in order to get more than +1 effect.

I also discovered Cheat mode will let you put irrigation on a Mountain - don't know if that's useful to anyone...

Oh yeah I LOVE that vanilla scens by myself aka 127 of everything onto everything!!!
I made a scen with ALL resurses having this to accelerate the game.
Actually it makes some challenge since you must hurry building Wonders or you just lose them.
I usually start with "make me contact all" (how is it called?) Wonder backed with the Wall and "drain" all civs for money or techs!
Also I rush for Leo to have auto-upgrading units which is awesome.
Actually on my vanillas (and even in normal games) the effect of Colossus is REALLY decreased...
And those STUPID Pyramids - I loved them in Civ1...
You may think it was easier to play (and it was) but I was so used to that super-upgrade...
