Has anybody played with the Survey policy yet? I see that the scout promotion tree is pretty juicy but the combat bonus against barbs is too tempting and the scouts are just too damn squishy. Has anyone been able to justify this policy over the other?

And why the heck can't I sentry units any more? Always relied on that to let me know when bad guys were trying to sneak in the servants' entrance.

I went to town with Survey's double xp and scouts as Germany. Actually got 3-4 scouts up to level 4 and 5 by fighting city-states, which had them at 37 strength before oligarchy and flanking. It was interesting for a while but city-states had walls by the time I was onto city-state #2. 3 scouts eventually conquered it, but it took too long.

I think optimal use is starts the game with Survey on, and let your scout attack a barb scout. 1 attack should get the first promo movement bonus. Then send them out to explore faster. Once your scouts have their level 1, switch off to the +5 vs barbs policy.

After getting first level, experience from fighting barbarians is 1 point. Survey doesn't double that. If it did Survey would be a bit more useful.

The developer's said early on that scouts were supposed to gain experience by exploring the map, as in the Community Balance Patch for Civ5, like 1 exp for every few tiles revealed. But getting experience for scouts in Civ6 for exploring must have been removed from the release version. If scouts gained experience by exploring the map, survey would very useful.

Pretty sure they get experience by discovering world wonders, and entering tribal villages though...I still like survey :)
