So I am playing as England and just found out I can not upgrade my swordsman to Red coats but they instead upgrade to musketman, and these cant become Red coats either.

And is there any good way to find the different units upgrade paths. The civilopedia inside the game is pretty bad currently.

Certain UUs aren't technically replacements for standard units. You can tell this because the civilopedia notes what unit a UU replaces. If there is no replacement note, it is an additional unit rather than a replacement.

non-replacement UUs:
Redcoat
Garde Imperiale
Rough Rider
Saka Horse Archer
Samurai
Berserker
Crouching Tiger

If they don't replace anything then you can't upgrade units into them. You have to build these UUs from scratch.

the civilopedia does list the upgrade paths pretty clearly IMO. There is both an "upgrades from" and "upgrades to" on each unit's page. If "upgrades from" doesn't exist, that means you can't do it. The confusing thing is that UUs don't necessarily replace other units now. Same story for berserkers...they don't replace swordsmen so there's no upgrade path :(

Seems to be a pretty fair trade off given that UUs are resource less and generally fairly strong compared to their contemperaries.

So just to get this one right. When playing as Russia I can start building up squadrons of horseman and then later on upgrade them to Cossacks, since the Cossack replaces the cavalry unit? In the civilopedia when reading about the Cossack it does not say anything about upgrading from, just that it replaces cavalry. But on the cavalry section it does say upgrades from horseman.

If the Cossack's Civilopedia page doesn't explicitly say upgrades from Horsemen, then no.

Ah, that is a so crap if that is the case. So what does my horseman upgrade to then, since I cant upgrade them to cavalry?

Sorry, I tried to check a Russia save but I don't seem to have any in the appropriate era. If it makes you feel better, in my current game as Arabia, I built some Heavy Chariots and they all upgraded to Mamluks just fine. The Mamluk is listed in the civilopedia as knight replacement... so I don't see why it wouldn't work similarly for Cossacks.

So, a unit will either:
  • explicitly state what it Upgrades From, or
  • explicitly state that it Replaces a unit, from which it will inherit the replaced unit's Upgrades From
Makes sense.

Redcoat
Garde Imperiale
Rough Rider
Saka Horse Archer
Samurai
Berserker
Crouching Tiger

India's Varu should be on the list too; description says it 'replaces' the Horseman, but it isn't actually set to do so.
Presumably because they didn't want Elephants upgrading into Cavalry.... though them upgrading to Tanks is equally daft.
