I love the Civ series, but have often wondered why humanities shrugging off of what is now classed as barbaric practices, particularly cannibalism and incest, have never been seen as an advance worthy of inclusion in the game.

Would we class ourselves as civilised if we still practiced these taboos? Hardly.

p.s. Can we have Civilisation for the UK crowd please. :p

Wait, are you saying you want cannabalism and incest included in the game to appease the UK crowd?

For cities like Norwich you could have increased population with decreased health & science.

It could work!

No, of course not.

I'm arguing that by no longer practicing such taboos we define ourselves as being civilised. Therefore the giving up of such practices should be marked as an advance towards civilisation in the game. It is significant and should be added.

The postscript was a tongue in cheek (note the smiley) dig at the Americanised spelling of civilisation. ;)

'Your civilization has reached a population of 5 million! Unfortuently, half of them have eyes too close togther'

Back on topic, you do kinda get some reward. Ditch slavery for emancipation and everyone else gets a happiness penalty and later on happiness resources like whale and fur lose their effect but if you get there first you get to build the powerful Rock'n'Roll, Hollywood and Broadway.

Thing is the incest taboo and probably the cannibalism one are instinctual. Both are relatively rare in human societies and require a cultural advance to rationalize them to their practitioners.
