Team Farthings

hmmm, keep getting crashes to desktop possibly due to memory exhaustion when I try to do more than two turns.

I'll try again tomorrow and see if I can't fiddle with some of the settings on my machine to avoid the problem.

You might want to go into the Options menu and set the graphics to low, turn off animations, etc.

1590ad, turn 228

Wow. It's a mess. We have troops all over the friggin place.

Musa has 4 mainland cities left, and one up on a northern island. All except for one are under pressure from us currently.

I think the island city we'll raze. When we can afford it, we could drop a city at the southern tip of the island and pick up 2 fish, a whale, and horses. We could also drop a second city on the larger island at mid-latitudes. Neither of those is really a priority, though. Hopefully we'll win before we realize those plans.

We're teching biology at 70%, 6 turns. Alarmingly, we are -67gpt, with 448 gold in the bank. I knock the tech rate down to 60%, and now we're +28gpt. Wow.

I redeem the pre-chops around London. UN in 8 turns.

1595ad

A Mali rifle attacks and kills a cavalry between our turns.

Joao (annoyed) shows up, demanding that we cancel our deals with the French. We don't do so.

Warwick: stock exchange > grocer
York loves the president
France and China get a happy Hindu wedding event
Persep will grow into unhappiness next turn, so I hire a merchant and run a -1 food deficit.

We take Awadaghost, the northern-most of Musa's remaining mainland cities. It was on a hill, and we sacrificed a couple cannon to take it.

We take Katsina, the northern island city, and raze it. Everybody back on the boat.

1600ad

Persep: cav > rock and roll, 12 turns
Cimmerian: cannon > broadway, 15 turns
phoenician: cavlary > hollywood, 18 turns

We get a great general. I send him towards Cimmerian because that's our hammer heaviest coastal town.

We take Tadmekka, Musa's capital-of-the-day. It comes with a granary and a forge.

Musa has two cities left.

1605ad

Our 10-turn peace treaty with mao expires.

Napoleon (friendly) pops up and wants to exchange world maps. I agree, because we want to keep him friendly.

Canterbury: cav > eiffel tower

We discover a source of gold near london.

Warwick and Persep love the prime minister.

Musa's caravel attacks and sinks one of our frigates. Gar.
Musa converts to Chrstianity.

We take Awlil. It comes with no buildings.

1610ad

Wang shows up offering democracy for steel plus 130 gold. I take the deal.

Timbuktu: lighthouse > courthouse

Musa's last city will fall next turn.

1615ad

York: cav > colloseum
Khazak falls, and Musa is dead.
Khazak comes with no buildings.

I begin to wonder whether attacking with airships decreases the chance that captured cities come with pre-built buildings.

1620ad

Joao asks us to convert to Christianity. I decline.

In our first full turn out of war, we're +40gpt at 60% tech.
Biology is in 1 turn.
UN is in 2 turns, and Wang, Napoleon, and Mao are all friendly towards us.

1625ad

Wang wants a defense pact. I decline.

Biology comes in. I set research to steam power, 4 turns.

York: colloseum > wall st

Mao completes broadway. I put Cimmerian on Ironworks, 14 turns.

London: UN > Statue of Liberty

The UN election is between us and Joao. I vote for us.
Wang, Nap, and Mao are still all friendly.

1635ad

I take a few towns off wealth. We drop to -131gpt at 70%, steam power in 2.

1640ad

Gao: courthouse > granary
djenne: courthouse > granary
niani: granary > library
taghaza: granary > courthouse

1645ad

We get a great spy. Great. He can't start a golden age, and we don't have a scotland yard.
London is far and away our leading espionage point producer, so i build scotland yard there.
We gain 10 spy points/turn overall.

railroad next, 5 turns at our current -123gpt deficit
We get some sources of coal

bulgar: granary > courthouse

1650ad

tekedda: courthouse > forge
niani: library > levee

What must we do to trigger a diplo victory vote? I've been waiting for that opportunity, thinking we could end the game in my set, but it did not come up.

I'll save here and let Shannon finish it off for us.

What must we do to trigger a diplo victory vote? I've been waiting for that opportunity, thinking we could end the game in my set, but it did not come up.

I'll save here and let Shannon finish it off for us.

The next vote comes up at a fixed number of turns after the previous one, 7 or 8 turns on Normal speed I believe. I'll finish this out this morning.

Turns 241 - 243 (1655AD - 1665AD)

T241 (1655AD) - Wang asks us to cancel our deals with Napolean. I decline and take a -1 hit with Wang. Trade Biology to Wang for Railroad. Start Military Science.

T242 (1660AD) - Persepolis completes Rock and Roll.
Diplo victory vote option comes up. I propose it and vote for us.

attachment.php

T243 (1665AD) - We win diplo victory with 690 votes. We only needed 527, so we could have won without one of Wang, Mao, or Napolean.

Here's the victory screen (no movie for diplo victory):

Our score barely cracks six digits:

Good job everyone. That game seemed pretty easy for Emperor eh? Maybe it was because of our awesome capital.

I've attached the save before victory and the save after. If you want to see all of the victory screens and get this game into your personal Hall of Fame, open the 1660AD save and end the turn.

Yay for us. I wouldn't have believed diplo victory was possible. But I guess you probably have to have that victory condition in mind right from the start, and I don't usually think that way. So, I learned something.

Jon says he's up for another game in a week or so after he's back from his trip, and I'd play another, too.

I guess we should either try for a weaker leader, a tougher map, or a poorer start. Something a little more militaristic, perhaps?

Shannon, are you up for another, or do you get enough of teaching during your work week? :)

Good job, everyone.

No, I don't get enough teaching during the work week, especially during this recession. Now if only I could get paid for playing Civ...

I'm up for another game. I've got time.
