Is there a place where I can see the actual gold cost of researching various techs? The game just shows how many turns it takes, but that depends of course on how much gold I'm producing on a given turn.

Actually, the raw tech costs are not that useful to know.
For one, you need to consider the level (but that is easy maths); more important, tech costs depend heavily on if you are trying to get that tech first, second, or later (not that big differences from 3rd to last).

Sorry for my ignorance, but what's CivAssist and where can I find it?
Doc Tsiolkovski, can you elaborate? Are you saying that it takes different amounts of gold to produce a tech depending on your level?

Here is a formula for tech costs.
Techs cost more on higher difficulty levels.
TechCalc also gives the cost (although I usually use CivAssist); both it and CivAssist can be found in the Utilities subforum of Creation and Customization.
CivAssist will look at a save and give you information about, such as potential and current trades, rioting cities, growing or starving cities, how close you are to domination, how much a technology costs and how much money you have spent researching it, and several other things.
