Tech paths in Civ 5

I'm actually confused on the issue. In Civ 5, are the prereqs for techs "OR" or "AND"?

There is no "OR" afaik.
Also there is no multiple tech requirement as there is for a few units in cIV.
So you can just put emphasis on Modern Armor and run over the world if you for some reason have not done that allready when you get them.

You sure about that? I've tried it many times mate and it won't let me get there. No matter what I do!!!!! If it does, surely being able to build Infantry without Rifling and Metallurgy it even more ridiculous!!!!! LMAO

i accidentally got infantry before rifleman a few games ago. definitely works, I was at war with the rest of the continent at the time and the infantry were a big help :)

Funny thing: to get mech infantry you don't need Infantry and i think (not sure tho) that researching them cost less overall than regular infantry.
Still untill you research the whole line you cannot upgrade older units to mech

Yeah...I REGULARLY hit mech inf. before inf. (largely by accident...which is perhaps even worse!)

My biggest problem is that quite often I look at the 2-4 techs Ican research (never really more than 2-3...which is a bit limited) I don't want ANY of them! I'll look and really not see anything I need/want. This is totally bizarre to me. In previous Civs I was ALWAYS looking forward to that next tech which will give me 'X'.....that feeling is a little bit rare in Civ 5 (although this must partially be owing to my unfamiliarity with the tech tree as of yet)

For a cultural victory I typically push the top side of the tech tree as far as I can; you're eventually left with only a single bottleneck tech on the bottom. Then research 10 completely useless techs to radio/telegraph and win. It comes across as design by dartboard.

Interestingly enough...on my cultural victory I found NOTHING worthwhile to research after getting broadcast towers and just 'sandboxed' it....invading people for fun to pass the time until my eventual victory.

This was the problem I felt on lower difficulty levels with cultural victory. Because once you've got the three cities set with cultural buildings, what threat is there? There needs to be a fire under you ass like another Civ building a spaceship or shooting for a diplomatic victory.

Well, I was on King (but, then again, I'm not a super-player or anything....I'm firmly average).

Unless the tech tree in-game is blatantly lying about it, yes. I'm about 80% sure I've actually done it, but I'm absolutely positive that the tech tree says you can do it.

I can believe that you can't UPGRADE to Infantry without being able to upgrade to Riflemen, though.

Not commenting on ridiculous or not, though. I really don't care - the tech tree is and has always been really game-y, and it's still really game-y.

Yep, because I completely skipped gunpowder and rifling and got infantry, and I was disappointed when I couldn't upgrade my longswordsmen and crossbowmen. I thought maybe you couldn't upgrade those units anymore. Then I figured out on my own that I bet I need musketmen and riflemen.

Okay, I was just asking because in Civ IV there were ORs and ANDs (which, in my opinion, was a better system).
