is any of you able to keep up in tech on emperor level in dyp ?
it just seems impossible to me...
i can easily outrace them on monarch, but the sheer amount of techs seems to make it too hard on emperor, especially if theres a huge continent with alot of civs.
they just trade techs to each other like mad
never had that problem on emperor with normal ptw.

I'll find out in a few days. I'm just finishing off my first game of DyP as part of a SG team. We are kicking butt on Monarch and have decided to jump to Emperor for the next game.
We are the tech leaders easily, even though we have slacked off since getting the Encyclopedia and have concentrated alot of resources on military. We are now pretty close to Domination and the Industrial Age in 1425AD on a large Map.

This is for PtW v1.05x and we are the Aztecs.

What version do you play? What Civ is your fave?

Our next game is going to be on PtW 1.10x.

seems to me that being scientific is useless or almost when playing DYP.
i play DYP, on monarch and eventually beat them scientifically. but never playing any scientific civs. in some cases being expasionist will help more since u can get lots of techs.
having great library and encyclopedia will really help. although WWW is pretty late! if you build that u have all techs in the game!

It seems to me that the tech race in DYP is easier than unmodded civ at Regent & Monarch. You just choose a path and research deep. Because of the sheer numbers of techs and paths, there are plenty of trading opportunities.

At Emperor & Deity (unmodded), many of us have relied on minimum research gambits to buy our way into tech parity. When we move to DYP, the slider restrictions mean that this option is less effective, so if we fall way behind early in tech, it is more difficult to catch up. Plus, if several AI's get way ahead, they can more easliy keep a lead with more trading opportunities between them. The player never has a chance to pull off 2 for 1 trade deals or to slingshot, but the AI's are getting 2 for 1 deals by researching different techs and then trading. The key is to not fall behind early which means getting contact with as many civs as possible as early as possible so as to put yourself in a brokerage situation. Once a brokerage position is established, it can be maintained, but if it is never established, it is very difficult to catch up.

As for the easy levels (Chieftain & Warlord), I think finishing the tech tree is more difficult in DYP because the rest of the world falls behind and there is simply too much to self-research by 2050 or before you trigger another type of win (cultural especially). The key to finishing the tech tree on lower levels is to give away tech to other civs so they will hopefully do some of your research for you & you can trade for it instead of wasting turns researching it.

It would be interesting to see the Realms Beyond crowd try DYP to see how they would handle some of the challenges presented by the slider restrictions and if they could pull off some of their varients under the DYP mod.

Wow. Either culture has been reduced in the test versions or I have vastly different build priorities from everyone else because my culture in DyP games is far lower than when I played unmodded. For instance, in my current test game I have 8k culture in 1590 AD, and that's as the Babylonians

I think he means many of the people who play Succession Games at levels beyond Diety by handicapping themselves in one or more ways.

On the topic of tech race, we are planning on increasing the tech speed a bit in the next release.

And on a side note who are the "Realms Beyond Crew"?

They are a group that play some pretty high level succession games in the SG forum (several series that start with RBE, RBP, etc) here and also sponsor epics on their own website (similar to Game of the Month in some ways, but significantly different in others). I am suprised that they have not tried something with the mod as it seems like it would be up their alley.

LKendter is looking at using the next version of the mod for a game so the Realms Beyond crew might just be getting ready to try it. If they do it'll be a good test for the mod and a helluva read.
