I agree, I reckon most civ1fanatics would enjoy a good ramble, and to splurge our views and tactics on the web (even if only a few people take notice). Thats what forums are for.
I wonder how could I've been so unimaginative and stiff when it comes to research. Now I'm far more flexible. When I'm in the mood I experiment with new tactics. Let me share some of my discoveries. I like beginning phase of the game, so I'll focus on that one.
Every single discovery at the beginning of the game can be considered the most important depending on used strategy. Sure, Chariots are fearsome but with Horsemens you can easily overcome your neighbours before they build any army at all and they can give you deadly initiative. Legions used properly can be used both for attack and defence.
Pottery can be deadly but I've hard time keeping my citizens happy. My advice to all: experiment a lot! Take Mongols and build lots of Horsemens! On an Earth map this is probably the fastest way to win the game with favourable Civ-spawning.
P.S. I propose that anyone posting anything relating Civ1 (covered before or not) should be encouraged, not showned upon.
