Technology Limiting

Hi, I recently got Civilisation and have won it a few times. I love it and all, but I feel I have -way- more fun during the early periods, Ancient, Classical and Medieval. Past these stages the gameplay gets more dull for me.

I've been looking around and I can't find an answer. Is there a way to cap technology so it does not proceed beyond a certain stage i.e. Medieval? If not, does anyone know a mod for this?

Thanks.

Perhaps you need to simply experiment a bit more in the later stages? For me, war in anything past Medieval was a scary prospect, the idea that I'd be technologically equal with the AI, and they would have a reasonably sized empire with enough troops to defend it seemed like an impossible prospect to fight against. But if you actually try it, you can get some very interesting wars revolving around who can get Rifling first, or large scale tank/infantry battles.

I would take a guess that you find it dull because you don't focus on combat as much in these eras, however I may be totally wrong. I tend to find games boring because I don't try any late game combat and am content with just sitting there, nurturing my science and culture until I win peacefully.

It's not so much that, I'm just more interested in the medieval era than I am modern one. I've done quite a bit of combat in the later stages but it's not as exciting for me.

Have you tried perhaps starting in a later era? I found that adds a little spice to the Modern era when it comes about because everyone has a much better tech footing and your lead isn't as dominant.

You can set a turn limit in advanced options; then the game will end after that number of turns, with the highest scorer being declared the winner.

I like the later eras but the way that the graphics don't change at all feels incredibly rushed. Even the AI feel polished in comparison.

@BecomeDeath: as a corollary to that, you won't have any AIs with 50 000 gold either

There are several mods that do what you ask. Some are absolute (tech tree ends at a certain point), some are a bit more fluid (tech costs are adjusted to give you more time in those early eras, or additional techs added). Note that there are many balance issues with these approaches; if you slow down tech rates without changing anything else, then your cities will grow much more quickly than you can unlock happiness-producing buildings, and your larger cities will mean faster production of Wonders and units and such. So the good mods that do this sort of thing adjust a wide variety of game systems.

If you go over to the Creation & Customization forum and look around there, you'll see that this question gets asked fairly often. It shouldn't be hard to find a thread with specific names of mods that do what you want.
