I'm sure this has been done before, but oh well.

I was wondering what everyones opinion on this was: What technology do you wish was in Civ4? You can only pick 1, and you can describe the effects it may have or what units you could build after aquiring it.

I have always wanted to have more techs in the future, specifically, cold fusion. I think it would be neat to have some cool futuristic robot warrior once you research it, and it could give like +2 hammers for every power plant in all cities.

Remember those cool futuristic units? I think it was Civ2...not sure though. They had that walker thing...and you could build roads on water I think...

Anyways let's hear yours!

I'm not at all interested in seeing more future stuff simply because for me the game is nearly always over well before 2000 so I rarely even use fighter, bombers or modern armour let alone any more future technology than that.

I would like to see some kind of boat that could attack land based units and tile improvements, maybe battleships with scud missiles that can fire missiles onto units near the coasts and destroy resource improvements.

That alone would be enough for me, as it's here that I think the game's biggest weakness is, namely navies are pointless.

Ships such as the one I mentioned would make naval combat much more interesting and a strong navy would be necessary to prevent such ships from taking out your land units.

There's no tech I'm looking for specifically, but I really think the naval game is weak. Not being able to enter ocean squares until Caravels, and having Caravels unable to transport military or indeed even do much damage makes most people skip navies altogether.

So some tech that would bridge the gap between galleys and galleons/frigates, that comes early enough to be useful is what I'd like to see.

Sounds like everyone's not so much looking for techs as for units.

I agree that I'd like to see navies beefed up. I'd also like to see an intermediary seige unit between Catapults and Cannons. The trebuchet has been mentioned several times on this board as fitting the bill.

Sanitation. +1 health per ten population. Allows the building of public toilets (which the Romans had) giving another +1 health to the city. Just think, without sanitation we'd all be right in it . . .

I would like to see a technology that lets you trade only specific techs before Alphabet. Why on earth is it necessary to have an alphabet if you want to teach someone to cut down a tree, or catch fish?

Canal building.

Make it a late classical/ early medieval tech, and then allow steampower to increase it's ability to span 2 tiles.

I'd like tech trading to not be associated with a tech for this very reason. I think alphabet should allow a "national language" national wonder that would be +1 culture in all cities.

As far as missing techs, I'd go with military strategy and associate barracks with it.

Empiricism. Using empirical thought to describe nature, rather than looking for answers in gods, stars, etc. Yes, we have scientific method, but that's an entire process, part of which is empiricism. Empiricism began in ancient Greece, if I'm not mistaken. Scientific method didn't come along until the Rennaiseance.

Maybe you could do something with globalization. It's a very important theme in modern society, so it might be included explicitly in the game, like liberalism is. Not sure how, just an idea.

Canal building sounds like a good idea to me.

Good idea, but what would be the purpose of building canals?
- Trade routes (like roads and rivers)? Is there a need for this?
- Be able to bring fresh water to a city (like rivers)? But we have already the aquaduct
- transport of ships over land? Shouldn't ships then also be able to travel across rivers?
- ... ?

I like this idea. Can't really say there are techs I would add. But I totally agree with the beefing of the navies. I have been using a transport-attack-transport-attack method to establish a coastal front line. It has been working quite well.

They need an early tech that could give you some sort of proto-spy.

It could investigate cities and cross closed borders.

Canal building would be a great thing, and I would like to see some more futuristic techs that would allow you to get some futuristic units in the process.

I agree... an early sneak/spy would be nice. Espionage could be discovered in midevil times.
