I purchased CIV3 yesterday and have played it once i level Chieftain. In playing the game my SCIENCE ADVISOR would say that i was ADVANCED yet i was using primitive units in modern times. The thing is, all other Civ's also had these units and i ended up finishing the game in 2050 and not even reaching FLIGHT or other advanced units. is this because i'm playing on chieftain? or i'm crap at the game? or is there a bug? or is there some option you have to press?

Thanks.

To put it to you nicely, yes you're crap at the game. :) In my first game at chieftain (to learn the ropes), I conquered everybody in 1929, built all the Wonders and I was pumping out modern armor and mech inf. And they have spearmen. :p
Advice - browse these forums more frequently for better strategy and tactics.

The thing is, i have played all versions of civ and when i played for the first time on Civ2 i also won it easy with or technology. I just don't know what i'm doing wrong. What can i do to increase my research in technology? what is the best government?

Jack up research spending...just like Civ2. You can also turn some citizens to scientists also. I used someone's mod that has scientists and tax collectors give +3 in beakers and revenue respectively. As far as governments go, the big 2 are democracy and communism and both have advantages and disadvantages. Pick one that suits your strategy for the game. If you love to pick fights, then chances are democracy will have you ticked off in no time. (Personally I don't like democracy period, but it's monetary benefits and worker rate are hard to pass up). Oh man I miss fundamentalism, lol.

what I can say...

Although I considered myself a pretty hard Civ2 veteran, I thoroughly read :scan: all topics in "Civ3 Strategy and tips" forum here, and begun the game already in Regent level. If I remember correctly, I'm using the reverse pope strategy (initial idea of the "pope strategy" belongs to Neo Guderian), that is, having my science rate on 100% and keep selling every new tech to every other civ in the world, so my money apporaches already 20000 pieces of gold although I'm buying city improvements every 2nd turn... And it's just 1670 AD... and I'm already preparing for some brutal expansion wars in order try how my army will behave on the battlefield... :D

Do you mean that the game will end no matter how well you did in the year 2050, Axe?
