Techs that you generally dont bother researching...

Because I love Monarchy, I never research Republic. If I've got the GL, I usually get it that way; otherwise, I'll pick it up later in a trade if I want it.

How long do you stick with monarchy then? Also in no-war periods you don't tend to republic, democracy?

Early on republic is weaker than monarchy. And by the time Republic is worthwhile Democacy is out there. Add that ot the fact that i am a war monger and will probably hold out until fuedilisiam...

(5 unit support for towns below size 6 i just make my core nice and big and then go and slay stuff without building an aquaduct. the towns support my MASSIVE military along with my workforce leaving me gold leftover to buy tech with!(i am only playing at warlord right now.))

I usually don't research Music Theory, Free Artistry, Navigation, Communism, Fascism, Espionage, Sanitation, Amphibous War, and Advanced Flight. I just trade for them.

i don't research: Music Theory, Free Artistry, Communism, Fascism, Espionage, and Advanced Flight

I'm in the midst of a game on a huge continent map and have been blessed with Babs, Iriquois, Persians, Aztecs, Egypt, Rome, and Zulu as neighbors. Getting first to Chilvalry, upgrading my horsemen and pumping knights has been a great way to eliminate the Babs, gut the Zulu, claim coal deposits from the Iriquois.

In C3C Republic does have unit support and late in the game I pay nothing for a relative large military. The only downside is going into Republic too early because any unit support you do pay is 2 gold per unit so it can get excessive.

An an average game I'll usually skip:

Monarchy, Free Artistry, Music Theory, Communism, Facism, Espionage, Advanced Flight, Amphibious War

Depending on the situation, sometimes I'll skip Nationalism (if I think I'll be ok defensively until infantry) and buy it from the AI later.

heh, am I the only one that skips Ironclads?

Ahad, you're not the only one!!

For me its ironclads and, controversially, monarchy. Republics kick butt!! Totally!! Just get some workers out there building roads and mining / irrigation. You soon end up with big, fat cities pumping out commerce. This lets you fund a military and research your butt off!! I do play on a low (2nd going on 3rd) level though and I avoid war until I get Knights!!

i usually skip all ancient era techs except alphabet-writing-philosphy-literature. i try to get philosophy cause the forst civ to get it get a free tech (and then i choose literature). build the GL and get all techs at once! heheh. i do trade for/demand in a peace treaty whatever techs i can get. especially military techs.

in the middle ages i skip free artistry/military tradition. i often skip chivalry too. the AI always researches them so i trade for them instead. chivalry you often get from GL. (unless you failed to build the GL of course... if i did then i do research chivalry.)

in the industial age i skip ironclads & nationalism and all the techs it allows.

playing C3C on deity/sid.

I skip either Monarchy or The Republic depending on which gov I plan to use. I'll skip both if I decide to go for Feudalism.
I'll skip both Democracy and Free Artistry if I don't plan on using Democracy gov or building Shake's.
I always skip Ironclads, Fascism, Advanced Flight, and sometimes Amphibious Warfare in the Industrial Age.

I skip Republic, as I go for Monarchy. I usually end up giving 20 gold or so to the AI later in the game for it, just to be complete. For the rest I research everything, although I trade a lot too, despite that the AI is "insulted" if I want to trade feudalism for engineering, for example. The idiots. :D Then I kick their butts, make them give everything they got for peace, and then go to war again.
