I would like that you discover certain techs on certain dates like the steam engine in the early ....'s to do so turns have to go from year to year in the medeival age and from moth to moth in the industrial age so it will be worth to upgrade you unit while in the industrial age.

Personally, I don't like the idea of certain techs being unavailable until certain dates. IMO, if you play Regent, the tech rate should work out as approximately "historical". (That may not be how it actually works out in play, but IMO that's how it *should* work. ;) ) What if I've already researched everything else I want in a given era? Why should I wait until year xxxx to get the next one?

I don't think that's what Eddy meant.
I think he meant that some eras should take longer to get thru. So in a way your game would slow down, but once the AI hits that era, their game would also slow down.
This way, more of the not frequently used units would get their lifespan increased.

I think the ancient era should take alot longer to get through, it just goes too quickly. just look at the ancient era in real life, it lasted many times longer than any of the other eras.

I wonder if in future releases of civ it would be possible to set the timescale directly, as you can set the victory conditions and barbarian level. Different people like to play in different eras - I enjoy the Industrial/Modern ages, but I have a friend who much prefers the ancient age, and usually quits by the time he gets up to the industrial age, as he prefers to battle with ancient units. You could have an option box in which you could choose "Play ancient era game" or "play modern era game". If you choose the ancient game option techs will stop at the beginning of the Industrial age and ancient era turns do not cover so many years per turn, plus techs cost more, to slow research accordingly. The game could end at 500AD (this would leave out SS victory, though). If you choose modern game option then ancient techs are much cheaper to buy and the years pass quickly - once you get to the Industrial ages turns drop to 1 year per turn, maybe 1/2 year per turn for modern age. You might even have 2 tech trees - one for each option, with more detailed advances for each era as required.

I could also be like American get Democracy for free or at a lower cost and the chineese get gunpowder at a lower cost, the romans will come with republic. what you think?
