Please post any nominations for the Consul of [insert very long department name mentioned in the thread title here]. You may also be free to use this thread to post debate questions for the candidates.

Code:
Decides on long term tech queues,
long term resource policies,
long term fiscal policies.

I nominate SAAM again.
I also nominate Regent Man.

At least they will give us a real choice.

Wow Thanks! I would love to take this position at some point. However I have thrown my hat into the ring for the External Consul position as it involves the area of the game in which I am most interested ATM. Reluctantly, I must decline the nomination.

I should really create some tough Qs to throw at you two just for kicks..

Hmm

1) How will you pique interest in a department that has seen little to no press prior to recent (due a firestorm over policy)
2) What is your feeling on our use of optimisim and hope everything goes for the best, as was done in T1?
3) Any ideas as to what our tech queue will be for the rest of the age?
4) Is there one single dividing issue that we can use as a wedge between the two of you that will keep going on for the entire term?

SaaM

I'd also like to know about long range tech queues. Specifically
  • Strongly suspecting that we live on a Pangaea, should mapmaking be a priority?
  • Should we be heading as directly as possible toward a government (either Monarchy or Republic)?
  • Should we go for literature, either so we can build the GL or just build libraries for culture and research enhancement?

Let see.... more discussions?? Pique mean provoke which means to give a rise to. Yeh that's all I can think of. If I understand your question right???

2) What is your feeling on our use of optimisim and hope everything goes for the best, as was done in T1?

I think we are going at a good steady pace. I hope it goes just as well as Term 1. You did a good job SaaM..:D I think we can keep the pace. We can speed up IF we have to.

3) Any ideas as to what our tech queue will be for the rest of the age?

Well get closer to the Middle Ages. Here is my plan...it may change:

Get Philo. With this we get Lit. Then I say try to get Currency, Construction, and Map Making. I would like to try to get Monarchy, but I think the people want Republic if I am not mistaken. Then we would try to get that.

4) Is there one single dividing issue that we can use as a wedge between the two of you that will keep going on for the entire term?

Right now...I have no idea..it will probably come up during the debate questions.

Don't if I answered your questions right, but I think I did....

Strongly suspecting that we live on a Pangaea, should mapmaking be a priority?

I say no. If we are on a Pangaea, we explore just once piece of land. I don't think there are islands up their IF we are on Pangaea. The people can decide if we really need it or not.

Should we be heading as directly as possible toward a government (either Monarchy or Republic)?

Yes, right after Philo if the people choose to go that way to Philo. What would I choose? I would say Monarchy. But if I am not mistaken, the people want Republic, so I would go that way.

Should we go for literature, either so we can build the GL or just build libraries for culture and research enhancement?

Both. But my top priority it the GL. IF we get behind in techs, we can catch up very easily. Libraries too for the culture and the science. So I say both.

I hope I answered all the questions right. If I didn't I can try to reanswer them.

Thanks!

I hope to have some discussions up that will generate interest. Right now, we have no idea where we're going. Heck, we're still in the middle of a debate that has been going on since SaaM and I accepted our nominations pre-Term I. We're still deciding whether or not to go for philosophy. I have no idea what the people want. I hear governments. I hear map making. I hear literature. What we need is a consul that will step in and finally clear up this mess. I believe that I can do that.

What is your feeling on our use of optimisim and hope everything goes for the best, as was done in T1?
Probably could predict this answer: I am not going to sit back and act like everything is a done deal. You saw this with SaaM and I: he was confident that we'd get philosophy first; I said that we probably wouldn't. I was pessimistic that we had horses and iron nearby; SaaM was confident that we did. So you see that I don't assume that we will do/have something. I like to plan and analyze a situation first, then get cocky. ;)

Any ideas as to what our tech queue will be for the rest of the age?
Like I stated before, I have none. We all need to sit down and figure this out. I hope to lead this discussion.

Is there one single dividing issue that we can use as a wedge between the two of you that will keep going on for the entire term?
Well, we don't know where our resources are, so let's go for... wait. ;)

Strongly suspecting that we live on a Pangaea, should mapmaking be a priority?
That depends. Seafaring galleys could aid us in settling faraway lands and do a few surprising D-Day landings. Also note, pangaea maps, oddly enough, do have islands in most cases.

Should we be heading as directly as possible toward a government (either Monarchy or Republic)?
I feel that we need to get a government soon. However, we have yet to poll which one we want: monarchy, republic, or feudalism.

Should we go for literature, either so we can build the GL or just build libraries for culture and research enhancement?
If the people still want to do a culture win, then libraries will be needed. However, I don't support building the great library, so unless an overwhelming majority wanted this tech, I wouldn't bother researching it yet.

These were some great questions; feel free to post more.

What about the other aspect of this position, which is to make overall policy on trades?

1. What would you see as the general kinds of items to be discussed for trade strategy?

2. Do you think leaders should propose their own strategy and modify it based on citizen input, or build from the ground up based on what the citizens want?

3. Tech queue has been mentioned in this debate, but how do you feel about tech pace and its effect on our neighbors.

Would you care to elaborate/rephrase this question? I'm sorry, but I'm not understanding...

Do you think leaders should propose their own strategy and modify it based on citizen input, or build from the ground up based on what the citizens want?
I think leaders should get the discussion started and all citizens should post what they want. Leaders can then interpret the posts and poll a variety of options, or if there is overwhelming support/disapproval, a leader can act on his/her own ideas.

Tech queue has been mentioned in this debate, but how do you feel about tech pace and its effect on our neighbors.
I feel that we should keep on researching. However, we should go for techs that would be good for trades. We won't keep up if we just blindly go into the future without sharing our knowledge for others' knowledge. Plus, if we want to build up some money, we can research techs known by others for a cheap discovery.

I might be giving away too much by answering, since part of the purpose of this question is to test the candidate's knowledge of the effects of trading...

  • Should we purchase other civ's monopoly tech or wait? Does the answer vary depending on which tech and who holds it?
  • Should we sell our monopoly tech? Under what conditions?
  • What terms should we try to get on resource trades?

Should we purchase other civ's monopoly tech or wait? Does the answer vary depending on which tech and who holds it?
Indeed it does vary. If we're in a war and losing, and a civ has replaceable parts, I think it would be worth the nosebleed price to buy it. However, most of the time, I would prefer to wait for it to get cheaper. Plus, giving our biggest rival beaucoup bucks is not the best way to catch up, nor is it wise.

Should we sell our monopoly tech? Under what conditions?
If the wonder that it allows is completed by us (i.e. We want the great library and acquire literature), then I would encourage trading it. Trading away our techs for other techs will help stimulate the tech race. However, unless there are is a good sized number of buyers, I wouldn't want to sell it. No need for the one civ we sell it to to make a profit for itself.

What terms should we try to get on resource trades?
Luxuries and gold per turn for the most part (for their resources). However, we might want to give up a few luxuries in a tech deal to cheapen up a tech.

Bonus Question:
With the recent victory for Philosophy in the latest poll, would you support halting the chat the turn prior to the discovery of Philosophy and possibly chaning the tech we recieve from it to something if it is found that our neighbors have one tech or another, namely if they have researched map making while we do Philo?
