TGOM 02 - The Grumpy Old Monk and the Ancient Crone go to Alpha Centauri

So do we now need to be considering researching/switching to commie then?

I don't think we're in any shape to do that right now - we first need to take down Hammi to ensure our own dominance of the continent. But I think it would be a reasonable plan for the future (i.e. once we wipe Hammi out). A well-managed communist empire becomes an absolute research juggernaut by Modern Times, and we have a large continent to build on.

It's not exactly something you could have prevented. Let's think of it as an "educational opportunity"...you can teach us the best way to play with a broken rep. :hmm:

lurker's comment: Well this calls for stealing your way to a victory. It seems this could be the next Bede lesson. I have been in two Bede games where we have won doing this. I can't wait.

Oh yeah right. That was the plan all along....:mischief:

My favorite extramural activities: theft and extortion.

I have had an idea.....Hammi is at war with Greece and Greece would make a nice client state. How about sending the cavalry army into Babylon with a couple of supporting cavalry, wreck the Babylonian economy and help Greece push Hammi into the sea. Then turn on Greece and push them off the peninsula and out of the jungle. We can do this all without any alliances, unless we wanted to invite the Persians to play, or do we want to open the dancing with Persia and embroil the other continent in war.

It would be nice to have three SCI, but broke, nations out there at the change of age.....There are way too many possibilities here....I foget what our ownership of optional IA techs is right now, though, and whether there are enough of them that it would make a difference.

Something to think about.

I suspect we're waiting for eotinb. He said he'd be available by the 19th, which is tomorrow. I don't mind waiting if it's alright with the rest of the team. I'd hate for him to have to miss 2 turns and it's only another day. :)

Edited to add: This is at least partly selfish on my part. I'd posted that there were a couple of files that wouldn't install on my new computer and I'd ordered a new set. It arrived today and had even worse problems than the original. Called my IT guy, who said it was the CD/DVD drive and to bring it back for a new one...tomorrow morning I hope. I've reinstalled the old corrupted ones...3 C3C files...2 .flc files of Enkidu Warriors and one (gibberish numbers and letters then ATRI.EXE). It's been playing mostly ok, and when crashes happen, it's in the first one or two turns. Besides, we aren't using Enkidu warriors in this game. :p

I'd be willing to try playing my turns when I'm up...even with the problems...but not sure how the team feels about that. So, I'm certainly in no hurry, but hope to have it fixed soon.

Gotta love that "pointy stick research". :p

Somebody posted something about a busted trading rep... would you need to be prepared to pay a lump sum amount for those first tier techs from the scientific AI? Or do you think you can repair the damage enough to do a gpt deal?

No hurry here.

If you haven't already, I would check the IDE cable (the cable that connects the optical drive to the motherboard). Those things are pretty cheap and often ship defective. And it's faster to change out a cable than the whole drive.

Tending to the business of the Republic, railing the high output areas and managing the citizens. Once RP came in I pushed the lux slider to kick off WLKTD everywhere, which was worth enough shields at Bedeville to save a turn off the Palace. Noreason not to kep it there as we have enough in the kitty to finance whatever buys we have in mind. We can buy Corporation from X-man if we want for a combination of silks and gpt by threatening war, but since we will get it for Atomic Theory when ToE comes in I don't see the need and there may be more valuable techs out there anyway.

It is time to start picking the towns for Space Program pre-builds. IIRC ship parts come in three sizes, 640, 320 and 160 shields and in most cases come in 320 and 160 shield pairs. Apollo costs 500.

The best way to do it is find towns that can do 320 and 160 in 10 turns, then start a prebuild (armies work nicely for the 320 shield items and banks are good for the 160 shield projects) when the research is ten turns out. We can match shields to build using cops to manage waste. So there is lots of room to play for our builders here.

We're pushing 800 beakers right now at 100% science and all scientific specialists but losing ~160gpt. That can be made up by peddling what we learn. The SS parts range in beaker cost from 7800 to 9600 so we are going to need the gold boost from a population enhanced by hospitals. We are also going to have to maintain the army needed to keep everybody off our backs and to seize the resources needed, though I have noticed that the AI are happy to sell SS resources (uranium, rubbber and aluminium).

Interesting times are ahead of us....

A few events of note:

That is why I knew it was safe to peddle SciMeth in a couple of turns, as there were no cascading wonders out there.

Most of the cannon are upgraded and all of the available muskets, knights and the one rifleman.

I encourage everbody to take a look at the specialist assignments and try to figure out why they are the way they are. I even used a couple of CE's in Salamanca when it was long food for a turn and took a couple of turns off the ToE build. Bedeville is close to being at 50spt, needs a little watering and some more judicious mining and a single cop and it will be spot on.

I've been chopping forest to speed buildings, where applicable, as they have passed their point of utility. We need either the mined bonus grass or the food for specialists (cops mostly). One or two cops in towns with a factory will trim the production to the right numbers. Also, if you keep a close eye on the coastal towns with harbors you can get a couple turns of boosted income by making miners fishermen.

Roster check:

eotinb - welcome back
gmharriet - on deck waiting for cables and such

And then I think it goes like this:

The General
cleverhandle
Bede - got it and played

I've had the AI threaten me for gold or techs (without any trade offers included), but I don't recall seeing an option to do the reverse to them. Have I missed something?

And, yes, what General Mayhem said!!! :p

bede has problems with saves. :rotfl:
At least he doesn't hide them like Tomoyo does. If you've ever tried to find one of Tomoyo's saves, ya gotta know how to look for it...actually hidden within a pic. I already checked to make sure Bede didn't do that.

Getting ready to return home tomorrow, but don't count on me for then. Flight gets in ~6pm Eastern, but then it's saying hello to the wife, etc. So don't count on me until Thursday, but possibly Wednesday night.

He never uploaded it, I checked the uploads folder too. To extort something from an AI simply ask for something from them but don't offer anything in return and choose the accept this deal or pay the consequences option. Usually doesn't work that well though :(

lurker's comment: I think he used renegotiate peace option. If you are not going to war with that civ (Persia) and you are stronger it's a way to lower the price of doing b'ness. Gram H. I actually did the same thing looking for the save. I even tried a few periods which Tomoyo has been known to use.

Oh, that explains how we could offer silks and gpt as part of not going to war. Thanks, Whomp!

Gram H. I actually did the same thing looking for the save. I even tried a few periods which Tomoyo has been known to use.
Do you mean a ".", like at the end of a sentence??? That's hysterical. I'll bet the first person who ever ran into that went nuts looking for it. :crazyeye:

Picky, picky, picky.

And you can use it when you have a busted trade rep. The deal has not been consummated. I was hoping you guys would figure out how to make it work, or ask the question

The mechanics are: Open the trading screen, click on "Active", then click on "Peace Treaty", the advisors will have a hissy fit, ignore them, then go ahead and pile up the offer till you get the FA's acceptance message. The only hitch is that you can't go back and may have to buy your way out for 20 turns, if you don't get the deal you want.

General Mayhem's comment: To extort something from an AI simply ask for something from them but don't offer anything in return and choose the accept this deal or pay the consequences option. Usually doesn't work that well though.

I have have never had "accept this deal or you will regret it" work with anything more than a one tile island nation.

I took a lot of notes that I can barely read, and I think I understood most of them, but why not a cop in Farm4 to get the extra shield?

I think because the two gold is worth more right now but you may be right.

lurker's comment: Oops my bad Bede. I didn't realize class was in session at that point and the GOM was asking a question. I thought it was a done deal.

and yes Gram it was "." where it was hidden.
