So, I'm playing as Spain and I manage to discover Monotheism before anyone else. So I get busy making Jewish missionaries, hoping that I'll get a great prophet soon and can build the Temple of Solomon. Each city with Jews gives you 1 gold per turn when you build it. What a goldmine!!!

So many turns pass, and I manage to convert most of the continnent and even get several leaders to join me, thereby ensuring good relations.

However, Saladin refuses to convert. His civic is theocracy, and so I cannot send missionaries to his cities. Also, he is the largest and most powerful civ in the game.

Before I know it, Saladin has spammed by cities with Buddhists and now he begins demanding that I convert. If I do this, I will lose relations with 6 other civs. I decline, and Saladin declares war on me!

3 turns later, there is a galleon at every one of my ports and horsearchers land and occupy my 3 biggest cities, including the one with the Temple of Solomon!!! Then, my economy collapses because I no longer get +50 gold er turn from the temple!!! Arrghh!!!!

So I started a new game.

It's so freaking cool that the AI will do that. Now I will have to be more causious in the future.

Did he attack you because of your religion simply. Or would he has not done so if you had a large military???

Another 2 days before I got it, store was sold out....

Thanks

Saladin is so overpowered. He's been #1 for every single game I've had on Emperor level.

Weak!!!:nono: :shakehead
Never Quit! :ar15:
Never Surrender!:spear:

Seriously, I don't get why people quit games like that. The only time I ever quit a game "prematurely" is when I'm testing a scenario and learned all I need to know for that particular test.

The trick to saladin is to convert him early. I had him beside me last game, made him go buddhist, he went theocracy and stayed my loyal ally the entire game.

He has a bit of a one track mind.

Eh, the first couple of times you're playing a game, you're still learning how it works. If I can trace my bad situation back to one mistake which seems obvious through my 20/20 hindhight glasses, I'll start over, a little wiser. It's more encouraging early on to see improvement in strategy than it is to keep playing until you're completely crippled.

Just want to point out that the AI in Civ 4 cannot be underestimated! (At least on Noble or up levels)

I love that Civ 4 will attack by sea in force. I never worried about these things in Civ II because if the AI did attack from the sea it would land one unit that I would very quckly kill. It is good to know that I will have to cover my flanks!

Did you have Buddhists in the cities he conquered? I'd guess so. If he did, it looks like he convereted those cities to gain LOS and had an invasion force ready. He then knew they were poorly defended and was ready to attack if you refused to convert. This seems to indicate rather complex AI planning, something that I didn't see in previous versions.
