Just did a trial run of creating random maps, and their is minimal difference between Archipelego and Continents.

Shame really as that's one of the reasons i don't like playing on a random map, far too many little islands and minimal solid land masses.

Preach on, brother.

It pretty much generates a "random map" mainly lost of small islands, a few good sized islands. Usually a good map for play.

Having said what I said, I started up a game with a random map and it turns out it's a really good map with lots of big continants.

From my experience on version 2.7.8 (Fantastic Worlds) there IS a noticable difference between continental and archipelago maps, but I think it also depends on whether you select small, medium or large maps.

Is it just me, or does every "customized map" or random map always make the supposed "continents" very thin and stringy? You almost never see huge landmasses such as the Europe or Asia makes up together, just long, think "continents"...

But maybe that's just me...

I agree, thealien_83. The computer generated maps lack true oceans and the continents are never impressive enough to be shared with even one other civ. They also never have big mountain ranges or long enough rivers.

I have to disagree on this topic. Maybe it's because I play TOT, but I have found a lot of differences in the random maps (I always play random, because I like that experience of really exploring unknown territory). I have played on one map which had a continent stretching the whole way round the world, and others with very big continents or lots of islands. I find it a challenge to have to adapt my playing style to each map (though I hate it when the island I start on is so small I have explored it before I have discovered map making)

I think it is my bad luck because every time I try to play a random map or even a customized map, and start of surrounded by plain grassland with hardly any forests or hills . So I quit and play on the world map. I always end up on the worst terrain with hardly any good terrain around. I feel that the map generation needs to improve.

You could "Mine" some trees. I'd rather have "too much" grassland than all hills and trees.

Me too - as long as you have a couple of shields to work with you can quickly build a settler and found another city with better production potential.
