The AI never seems to be neutral for me

It's only in the early game after meeting them, but some covet your lands and quickly become hostile.
Has anyone ever countered a real neutral AI? For me all the AIs in the late game are either Friendly, Guarded or Hostile. In some cases Afraid. But never Neutral. :crazyeye:

I have seen "neutral", but it doesn't last very long. 'Guarded" and "hostile are what I am used to seeing.

I have seen Neutral civs but after a while ~10 turns they shape some opinions around you and they go into Friendly, Guarded, Hostile, and rarely Afraid. I don't think AI's are coded to be Neutral all the time.

It could've been an interesting decision to make a few leader AIs favor neutral opinion. A lot of countries of modern time could be considered neutral, especially like Switzerland.

If you meet a civ early on, they are more likely to be nearby, and so there is more likely going to be associated negative modifiers. Civs that are further away will be met later, but which time you'll usually have done something else to earn a negative modifier (though to be fair, I often come across 'neutral' civs, though it does seem more unlikely than not).

First turn I encounter a civ, it's neutral. It may stay that way for awhile. (Under the no major events have occurred)

But after it shifts once; any shift back to neutral really means they don't like you. (They'll have listed reasons for not liking you.)

Just finished a King game - Elizabeth (on a different continent) was marked 'Neutral' the whole time, despite having some negative markers against me (coveting my lands, coveting my Wonders, competing for CS allies). She was still perfectly civil and happy to trade. It doesn't happen often, though.

I am playing on huge, prince. I got a continent all by myself. Never got blood with other civs. All of the sudden, during the 1800s, they start frowning. By the 1850s, they all declared war on me.

The mind boggles.

Has anyone ever had a Civ denounce them and then go to Neutral rather than Guarded or Hostile? This happened to me (incidentally, in the same King game I mentioned a few posts up). Bismarck was Friendly for ages but when I started winning he got cross, but stayed Neutral after denouncing me and didn't declare war. I'd never seen this before.

Yeah it happens. Can't recall offhand examples, but it happened several times that I just ignored them.

Also Neutral is an extremely dangerous sentiment. Always remember to highlight for further traits like "they covet your lands" or "they believe you are winning the game..."

Here's a nice example of "neutral":

On archipelago it's common for the AI to stay neutral for a long time. I had Alex as a close neighbour, but never expanded his way and never took his CS's and he was neutral for the whole game.
