The Avatar size limit is to arbitrary

Personally I think avatars are a total waste of time and a distraction in the first place and I would be quite happy not to have them.
Then why do you use one?

Avatars can be a way of building community spirit, as well as identifying posters. I recently got active on a Star Trek forum that has weekly avatar contests. I've actually been able to make a few, thus improving my graphics skills through practice. And awhile ago somebody started a joke that seemed to really catch on... now quite a few people have added sombreros to their avatars (my current spud sports a sombrero at that forum -- yes, while riding his motorbike!)

I think a size of 100x100 would be a nice change to have, as so many avatars currently available are that size. Any smaller and the details get distorted too much. That's why I tend to use smileys on forums where we're not allowed larger avatars.

exactly. i spend some time on another great forum and there are avatar & sig gfx competitions, challenges, competitions to update the site banners...
and if you don't want to see them just click them off... i don't understand why people here hate them so much...
i myself am not a fan of 600x600 sigs w/ 1000 different images... but size can be controlled by the admin (who also seem to dislike them)

edit** & what do they distract from??...what are you people, kittens? lol @ some people w/ no ability to control where their eyes go

as much as i love his site i think it is filled w/ some crabby people who dislike change.

We dislike change if it's change for the worse, yes.

Change for change's sake is not always a good thing.

lol @ people here being so against larger avatars & sigs...saying it's too distracting  - as far as i know every site i have ever posted on you have the ability to NOT see sigs & avatars...so why not just shut them off...

True. But I would like to see regular sigs - they're often entertaining and contain funny quotes and interesting links (I found a link to a funny Civ IV story in pholkhero's sig, and a great flash game in that of none other than AL_DA_GREAT!). And they're not usually distracting, either. Sig pictures are distracting, because unlike avatars they punctuate the flow of the discussion (like trying to hold a debate while someone sprays a fire hose in your face) and on slower computers they take forever to load.

Because I like avatars and sigs, the way they are. If they got annoying enough (through permissions for animation and images in sigs and so on) that I had to shut them off, I wouldn't be able to see them anymore, the way I like them.

I'm not the only one.

And by the looks of it, Thunderfall likes it the way it is too. And that's all that matters. :p

...i thought it was amazing because of the quality of information and knowledgeable posters/modders...
i guess that's how you & i differ.

The quality of information and knowledgeable posters and modders are not drowned out by spam. Because we have rules.

Insulting us is probably the safest way to make sure you aren't going to get anywhere. That only strengthens my opinion that animated avatars and images in sigs are not only distracting and annoying, but also supported only by immature fanatics. And yes, I am calling you immature even if I'm one year older than half the age written in your profile, if that's real.

You keep telling us we can turn them off... well I don't want to turn off signatures, I think they are great, especially for the Creation and Customization forums where they link to databases of various creators, but I still don't want to see the images. What do I do? I have to turn them on any time I need to get a link from someone's sig and then turn them back off? :crazyeye: You must be kidding me.

And yes, there are rules against too many animated smileys in sigs. Some people proposed banning images in signatures completely, but it didn't get too much popular support (and I personally don't agree with that either), so it didn't happen. Be sure that if you lump 30 ":ar15:" in your sig a mod IS going to warn you and your sig WILL be forcefully changed by someone who has the power to do so if you refuse to change it.

If you so desire some picture to follow you wherever you post, make it your avatar.

Yet in turn you insult others. I have animated avatars and images in my sigs at other forums -- am I an "immature fanatic"?

I'm not pushing for animated avatars here because I know it's not going to happen. I also know that if it did, some people would go overboard. I know we're not going to be allowed sig images, either, and I understand that. There are some forums I don't go to anymore because the sigs are animated and glitterfied and take forever to load.

I do use a blinkie in my sig at one forum:

I'm rather fond of it, as I made that one myself in honor of my favorite source of online cat giggles. :)

im not flaming anybody. yall are so paranoid around here about people "flaming" someone or someone spamming...get over yoursleves.

Excuse us for trying to be civil in our discussions.

I suppose that isn't too bad, but I'd still rather signatures not be too flashy. Of course, I'm speaking as someone who has a pretty conservative sig.

I've seen on other websites signatures that span the length of a whole screen. Embeded youtube videos, millions of pictures and stuff, to me is very sophomoric.

Did you fight for bringing animated avatars and sigs here?? I can't remember you ever doing so, so why in the name of God do you feel offended by what I said? In any case, you're getting offended amazingly quick. :crazyeye:

(and this is not an insult, just making sure you know that)

You missed my point entirely too, my point was that if you're going to be rude while asking for something that would be an effort to implement and that a good part of the people disagree with, you're never going to get anything. I believe if he stayed polite during the whole thread he would have had a much better shot at it. That was the point, why did you have to twist that into me insulting you??

You were insulting criminiminal, not Valka. She was just resentful of the practice.
