The Americans. Not just trying to be Patriotic. The combination of Industrious/Expansionist is a great combo. Workers work faster to help with development and that early scout goes out and picks up three or four extra tach advances plus some early cash. The F-15 seems like a unit that could be very useful in the late game.

Hmmmmmmm

I've not heard anyone with the game say it is yet, in fact I've heard many people say fighters are useless because the air superiority isn't working right.

As for the abilities I think you'll find ALL the abilities are useful, but expansionist is only an early game thing really - As time goes on it becomes useless.

On harder difficulty levels the best things to be are probably Scientific and Religious - Both will give you a better chance culturally, the former will give you a head start to getting that essential Great Library and the latter will cut out those devestating periods of anarchy when practically all your city improvments are destroyed on later levels.

Guess you both are right : on lower diff levels the Americans are pretty nifty with expansive and industrial, but on higher levels, forget them ! For those games take the Babylonians for their religion and science. Too bad their special unit (the bowmen) is really crap :(

Another good choice for high difficulties would be in my opinion the Greek... commercial and scientific with a rather good defense unit for the beginning

Yes, I like the Babylonians, and I never build bowmen, because I don't want a golden age that early.

I think that was a game balance thing. Give them Hvy Cavalry (Catephracts sp?) or chariots - they had both - and they would just be too strong.

I will start a game as the Chinese tonight and try them :)

Yeah, I like the Greeks too. I started as them in the very first game that I played, and the combination of Commercial and Scientific gave my economy and my science a real boost. The hoplites are wonderful in the early game because they are very difficult to kill with the early level units. The Greeks may well be one of the better civs to play especially at the higher levels, because the hoplites will keep you from being munched early on in the game and the trade and science bonuses will help you keep up a little better in the tech race.

I cast a third vote for the Greeks and pretty much second everything RougeKnight said. Those hoplites will save your ass for at least a good third, if not half, of the game. The free advance for each era is a nice boost every 1000 years or so and the lower corruption throughout the empire seals the deal.

Although...uh...I really haven't even tried another civilization yet...

I am thinkink that you underestimatink Mother Russia in ze ceevileezation game. Cossack's not beink very good for you, da? Once you submeet your patheteec cultures to de Kommunista... thinks will beink good again. If you do not submeet...

You will die.

Wait teel ze multiplayerink patch is released. Ve will show you reedeeculous Americans what world dominatink really is!

And that's my two cents. :crazyeyes

Romans ROCK! Played a game on chieftain and won with the romans, on my second game with the romans on warlord, headed for another win.

I played as the aztecs once, which was sorely disastrous... Got a golden age with just 2 cities (triggered by the Jaguar warrior), and one got taken by the americans right after. This was a regent game, IIRC, though... The jaguar warrior is ok, but not very useful, except for exploration/huts.

Roman legions, however... 3 att. 3 def. is pretty good.

Promise delivered!

Level: Prince
Total Civilizations: 6
Barbarians: Restless

Opponents: Persia, Greece, Japan, America, Babylon

... all dead.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

It's all about those wacky Germans baby! Scientific and militaristic is a nice combo - let's you keep up or stay ahead in the tech race and at the same time whup some foreign butt when necessary. Great leaders early means early armies which means early domination.

And let's not forget about the German's ability to blitzkrieg. Makin' it to the modern era can be tough sometimes, but if you do, it's Panzer time! I built up a nice division of these bad boys and steamrolled over the French (gee, that sounds familar...). I took 8 of their 20 cities in one turn. Silly French! Your musketeers are no match for my rolling thunder!

This seems like a weird hybrid of German, Russian, and French accents, plus a number of other elements I can't quite identify :)

I would say the Persians because of their unique unit. Any one knows why the Persians are always getting the best UU (in AOE they have elephants which is the strongest unit in the game)

my first choise are the English (from the humanic aspect) i choose my civ with looking at what they v done in RLs history, so there is no other civ as glorios as the brits (in war, culture, human rights ect.) there is a british and german abylity to fight wars till the end, a thing the russians or americas never did (these nations always try to be hard but its soldiers are to week to fight till end ) its difficult to explain i just try to disrcibe a special british and german ability

hope u understand

methinks Persia, too...

early offensive special unit tends to secure you a lot of enemy cities EARLY on, that make you a larger empire from the outset...

I have to agree that the the Americans are easy to play in the beginning, I've managed to build all yes, ALL the wonders of the early ages.

But the Romans are hardier in both expansion and conquest aspect. I guess it's their militaristic ability. All I need is a horse and iron or saltpeter resource and of course a Sun Tzu's Art Of War and I can kick ass anytime!

Well, at least for me the Chinese looks like my best shot to win at Deity.

Early game - industrious workers build irrigation network, allowing my cities to grow fast, rush building/killing citizens.

Early mid game - get iron, horse resouces and Chivalry, build huge army of Riders, which beat up on Immortals, War Elephants, Legions, Impis, and Samarai, not to mention swordsmen and pikemen, when veteran or elite. Workers go back and mine to ramp up production.

Fairly soon (militaristic civ) you get a great leader. Use the first to build the Foridden palace deep in enemy territory -or- create an army of veteran Riders (save the elites for more leaders). After the first army victory you get another small wonder (don't remember the name) that increases your chances of generating leaders.

Now you will get a great leader about 1/10 elite battles. Use them to rush build every wonder near the front lines, expanding your culture and making conquest easier.

Late game - don't know yet  This strategy has worked at lower difficulty and I'm about to try it at Deity. I will have to decide whether to go for military victory at this point or hunker down with research.

I tried the Greeks and the Persians on Deity (why does civ3 call it Diety? couldn't be a spelling error, if it is it's another proof the game has been rushed) level. Both quite unsuccesful. With the Persians I was able to complete The Colossus. With the Greeks I wasn't able to complete a wonder at all. By 500 BC the AI's were building Sixtine Chapel and had completed Great Library, Great Wall, Great Lighthouse, Oracle, Pyramids and the Hanging Gardens. By 500 AD they begun works on Hoover Dam and had already completed J.S. Bach's Cathedral, Leo's Workshop, Magallen's Expedition, etc., while I was still researching The Republic for godsake! I decided to retire and watched the summary replay. WTH... Look at the AI's territory!
Quite demotivating. I'm now gonna check out the Chinese, but I doubt I will do any better, the AI is extrmely powerful on Deity level! Can not be compared to Deity level on Civ2.

I like the French actually, industrious workers are very good, and commerce bonus comes in handy, as it boosts research very nicely :)
