-All levels untill King don't need any strategy the AI bahaves too stupidly.
-On Emperor level it's good to expand a little but as soon as you have 15 good cities see good cities you can start conquering...
-Deity level definitely needs a strategy and I would suggest Expanding. But Expanding involves other strategies too. One of my better ones is The Polar Strategy
-Oh and one last thing in multiplayer which can be concidered as Super deity sometimes Expand, expand, expand, expand... Well expand as much as there is free space !!!
One thing is sure...
1. declare war on other civs
2. win game
3. repeat
...is far too boring
Oh and try to do that in MP and you'll get your @$$ handed.
You'd be surprised at how many newbies jump into multiplayer and die. Once time I killed a guy with a single chariot.

I think that multiplayer is definitely not a good place to learn...
On the other hand, what you learn in single player games is not always applicable in MP...That's where some people get confused.
start out alone on a continent, like aztecs, then turn off all barbarians, then {the fun part} dont build anything but settelers untill you have half the continent populated, then make sure that every city always has 1 active settler/engenier. this will cause you to have a large, strong empire that is even all across, as your central cities have thier population down cause of all th settlers.
but then again I only ever got 1 game with a rating above 100%...
