I think the Gallic swordsman is the best of the three because of it's extra movement which allows it to retreat when losing. :mischief:

I voted "Roman Legionairre". 3 attack, 3 defense. Versatile unit.

Edit and off topic: I think the sword is called Gladius.

While the Galic Swordsman is very awesome it is rendered nearly useless by knights whereas Roman legionaries still offer pretty good defense and offense in the age of Medieval Warriors because they are cheaper and still hold the one extra defense point. In consequence I voted for the Roman Legionary.

Gladiator Immortalis! How can you not like a unit that doesn't become obselete until Infantry (believe me, they work well enough against Rifles) that comes in the Ancient Age for 30 shields?

If I could still build gallics after discovering feudalism, they might have won. As it is, you gotta go with the immortal. 4 attack for 30 shields? That's just sick and wrong...and the AI pays the penalty every time.

They're all good.
Persian immortals are good for early warfare against spear units. Very easy to use.
Roman Legionaries are the good cause they have extra defense. NOt only is that good when they're fighting but they can fortify cities till Musketmen.
I've never used the Gallic swordsman. I hear it's really good with the extra defense. But then again, I dunno

You could say the same for the Gallics ;) - the extra movement is nasty for
the AIs in the early times. I like them better than immortals, but thats just
me :mischief: .

In vanilla civ the Persian Immortals are unmatched by any UU...that has changed since PTW and Conquests however. I still like those immortals however.

The extra movement point is quite powerful, both tactically and strategically. I voted Gallic sword (although all 3 UUs are quite good).

Immortals, even if you have a perfectly flat area around you for your Gallic Swordsmen to enjoy their second movement points. I still like them, though.

Gallic swords are overpriced, it's (45-50) shields per unit or something. With über armies in C3C Immortals are a top choice.

Legions. no need to send pikes with your army to mop up damage, and you still get a decent attack. I'm playing as rome, so that may be a slight bias.

I will have to say Legions because they just really seem to work for me. The extra defense makes enemy units much more weary of attacking your stack, so they all arrive healthy.

Gallics cost only 40 shields in Conquests, and a C3C Gallic Army has three movement points and can attack thrice -- superior to a slightly stronger Immortal Army that can only attack twice.

Man, I just realized how lame my argument was. I just have the best experience with legions, ok? Maybe it's their reputation, or the fact that the sight of 30 of them just oozes with power and dominace.

gaellic swords do it to me.
nothing like a horde of torch bearing, homicidal, painted pack decending on that poor inner ring city to boost your morale and break the evil french-german-roman-viking back in a jiffy

The Gallic Swordsman works perfectly for me. This UU simply combines the good movement of the Horseman, and the great attack/defense of the Swordsman! What else could I ask for? You can arrive quickly in your enemy's borders, you can run away if your unit is losing the battle, and it still have good attack AND defense!
What Arathorn said was right, though... it's a shame that, when you get Feudalism, this awesome UU is replaced by the lame Medieval Infantry...
You people can disagree, but when you are in a GA, getting a GS every 4-5 turns in almost every city you have, and suddenly they are replaced by the MI, in a huge map, and your enemy is very far, you really get annoyed with this...
