Just to clear things, Arathorn didn't say exactly what I wrote above, I don't know if he thinks MI is a bad unit, but I think, at least in this situation (using the Celts, and the GS), he thinks like me.

i would say that the best is the Immortal cause if u get enough of them u can devestate anyone in the ancient age and their good up until the inventions of knights but the only bad thing about them is if u dont have iron then ur screwed

Just to clarify, I don't think the medieval infantry is a bad unit. I just don't think it's as good a unit as the gallic swordsman. :)

It's hard for me to pick between a 4/2/1 for 30 shields and a 3/2/2 for 40 shields. Not sure which way I'd go there. But I went with immortals because I can build a 4/2/1 for a LONG time but the option to build those 3/2/2 guys goes away upon Feudalism, making me a bit sad.

I voted for the Gallic Swordsman, but after thinking should have said the Roman Legionnaires. I have always done well with Legionaries and run about 50/50 with the Gallics. I have had bad luck with the Immortals overall as well. Not saying they are bad, but if I play Persia I will get some neighbor who can put stopping power into the immortal who will mess with me for the entire "start" game time (Greece, Iroquois and such).

Immortal, the military unit for paused, pondered and secure attacks like my owns :)

I could choose between Immortal and Gallic Swordsman. Persian Immortals are like cheaper version of Medieval Infantry only 10 shields cheaper, available before the Middle Ages and could build as many as I wanted to wreck havoc on enemy lines. Immortal armies in C3C move like Mongolian Keshik except they don't ignore movement cost of Mountains and Hills.
Gallic Swordsman acts like Iroquois Mounted Warrior with extra defensive point for counter horsemen attack, and costs 10 shields more. Unless I have larger cities, I may have harder time picking at the right moment to declare war on annoying neighbors.

I like Legions, but gave the Greeks a GA when my Legion got taken down by a Phalanx...argh... precisely the wrong outcome.

Immortals scare the hell out of me... So they are probably the best, even though I voted for Legion!

Gallic Swordsmen - their retreat ability is great (well... maybe it fails against the Zulu), they are cheap knights. But the fact that one can't build them after discovery of Feudalism and triggering GA is really annoying.

Best regards,

Slawomir Stachniewicz.

I voted for the Persian immortal cause they are probably the best unit in the ancient age with a 4/2/1 rating and at a 30 shield cost. But they are really good if you get a good bit of them id say bout 20-30 of them and take them in and you can wreak havok on your neighbors. But this is in the early game.

i was about to wote for GS, but then i thought of the cost-difference... you get 4 legionaires for three GS... so i woted legio ...slower, but unstoppable, when in stacks.

Tough choice. Sounds like this could be made into an ancient-era only scenario with just Rome, Persia, and the Celts (with equal starts) just to see who wins.

Celts every time, with Persia second. This is also based on traits, but I think the Celts UU would win out even in a traitless game.

In an AI vs AI game, the Celts would probably win, assuming near equal starting positions.

Agricultural makes the AI expand much faster.

Besides that, the Gallic Swordsman can retreat, while Legionaries and Immortals always do or die.

I voted for the Gallic Swordsman. Is main weakness is the limited timespan: The Medieval Infantry after Feudalism is not the best replacement.

So why not go with a Medieval Infantry, a bit cheaper and named Immortal, right from the beginning?

A tough choice, but as the UU is tied to the Civ, I would prefer the Celts over the Persians. Both are great, however. :)

I would probably give the Celts a worse start just to make it fair. In fact, I'm testing out a start right now... (Great Lighthouses are small wonders since it would be hard traversing seas in an ancient era only scenario...)

I'd have to go with the Immortal. It destroys everything except the Hoplite and the Legionnaire in the ancient age. The extra attack point really puts it in a different class from the Legionnaire and the Gallic swordsmen. The extra movement and defense are most definitely nice, but swordsmen are generally regarded as offenseive units, and thus the extra attack point puts them above the others in my opinion. The Celt swordsman would come a close second, because speed kills in Civ 3, while the Legionnaire comes a distant third, because, although it is nice, it just doesn't quite match the others' offensive capabilities.

Immortal, but not hands down, I haven't used the Romans so I can't comment on them, but the cost effectiveness of the Immortal, and the fact you can build it for so long turns my choice in its favor. The GS is just slightly less effective IMHO so I have to rank it a close second, two good civs with two good UU, I don't think the Roman Traits or UU make me want to play as them so I doubt I'll be able to weigh in on the Legionaires...
