I used the C3C 1.22 Combat Calc,
The thing is, a cost of 30 has not only the advantage of being simply cheaper, it probably needs one turn less to produce. At this stage of the game, 2 turn production is likely, and an Immortal might be produced in 2 turns (15 production, idealized), but a gallic would would waste shields and still need 3 turns.

Say 20 turns production period: 10 Immortals vs. 6 Gallics.
Only if you're not micromanaging enough. A good player will lose close to 0 shields, making it essentially a 3 Gallic for 4 Immortal situation.

Gallic Swordsmen. Used right they are absolutely lethal. Yes, they expire quick, but you shouldn't need them by the time you've got feudalism.

I used to be a big Immortals fan - but I have found that mobility is FAR more valuble than attack, which is why gallics cost more. Worth it in my opinion.

Legions are nothing special. I suppose they are useful, but I've never found them exceptional. To really feel the benefit you've got to keep your offensive units fortified in one place - which is not something my combat strategy allows.

Hands down, Imortals are the best! Ancient age attack of 4 is something to be reckoned with, and doesn't quite become obsolete until the industrial age. They have the defense of a spearman and the attack of a longbowman. They are still formidable against early gunpowder units, especialy the cavalry. Their high offence is probably the only thing that can help you in the ancient age when you are up against those pesky spearmen with defence bonuses inside the cities. Having Imortals will give you a definate lead early in the game that won't go away.

Actually, you can still build Gallic Swordsmen after Feudalism if you haven't had a Golden Age yet.

Also, there is an edit feature that makes it so that you don't have to make another post. ;)

I voted for "other", as I think they all have their strengths and weaknesses, they are all very good UU, hard to pick between them.

I think you are right Ivan, on the point of that they are all very good UU. I also voted for other as well because I believe that they are all pretty much equal.

I wonder how the Mounted Warrior would stack up to these UUs as a wildcard... It's got the mobility and 3 attack, but low on defense. Gallics would cut right through them without fear of retreat.

I like the Immortal the best. That's, tho, partly due to my playing style, which focuses on infantry/artillery stacks, which doesn't allow for taking full advantage of the Gallics' movement bonus.

Hit the nail on the head there really - your choice depends on your tactics.

For me, slow units are no good for a serious war. You can't bring them to the front line quick enough and they can't retreat to safe ground after an attack. My tactics usually involve fast units in an open formation coming from several angles. Defensively, I prefer retreat/counter attack to fortified units, and this really requires fast attacks.

Slow units can be easily cut off early on in the game before the infrastructure is highly developed, making them even more dangerous, especially while defending.
