Longbows function as something to fall back on if you find yourself without iron.

I've been playing as England for the first time in conquests and the man'o'war is absolutely deadly on an island map. Coming at the end of the middle ages it means you can blow railroads to pieces as they are being laid.

It seems to me that shields in the industrial era are more crucial than at any time before and delaying the AI's ability to create factories is going to give you a bigger and bigger advantage the longer you can keep their improvements flattened.

Not only that, but they are the most powerful naval unit on the map, and with a slavery ability they are almost unstoppable and practically self generating. Bear in mind as well that enslaved ships don't cost you mainenance. It's just a free piece of artillery.

Ok, so you can pillage with normal units but if you are at sea you just can't be touched.

I'd say the Settler, you would not have any cities without that little guy!

As far as fighting units go, I'd have to vote for the man-o-war. With enslavement and island map, it becomes VERY handy indeed.

Now, after I saw so many people saying artillery, I'm sorry that I didn't include it. And I agree with most of the votes, I also voted Cavalry.
And sorry for the "Longbowmnn"!

I also like Legionairres, but I think Cavalry is better, because from the moment I enter middle ages I try to research as fast as I can Millitary Tradition and in a few turns I have this unit and attack everything with it.

I still believe Immortals are better than Legionaires. Perhaps it's because I'm a builder, and I want short offensive wars, where Immortals rock.

I just voted for bomber, although they come quite late in the game, they can really help in a situation where you can't overrun the enemy (ie without artillery support).

Although I, too, would change my vote to artillery if I could. Mostly because they come earlier and are on the upgrade path for catapults and the like, which I also use a lot. Bombers, however, have the advantage of lethal bombard. I have taken cities and even fought entire wars against moderately strong civs without a single unit loss because of this.

Have some cavs ready to capture the empty cities, then to me it seems a real alternative to tanks. A bomber for each tank, you'll kill slower, but have little to no attrition, depending on if the enemy has AA.

Impis are by far the best unit in the game. when I play as the Zulu I send out MY speedy Impis and Destroy My Rival's infrastructure and capture their workers hampering thier expansio economy and science production as well as cuting off from stratigic and luxury resourses. if you send enough of them early enough your enemy can do nothing to get rid of them, even swordsmen will find themselves begging for mercy at the hands of the zulu

I disagree beacause an attack four troop (immortal) has about a 59% chance of winning against a defence three troop (Legion) However an attack 3 troop (Legion) has a 64% chance of winning against a defence 2 troop (Immortal) Calculated assuming no one was fortifid on grasslands. Only a 5% difference but it does make a difference.

However if the Legion is fortified the immortal only has a 49% chance of winning while the if the Legion attacks the fortified Immortal (both case assumed to be on grassland) the chance of the Legion winning is 55% actually rises by 1% no big deal but it all adds up. An easy way to see this is to use the editor and have a mass combat between 100 Legions and 100 Immortals the battle can become one sided very quickly.

However after saying all that my choice of unit for when i feel its all over are Rifleman. An attack of 4 and defence of 6 at that point in the game can very quickly turn the tide of war. The next big change i find are cavalrey attack 6 with a movement of 2 is deadly indeed.

I voted for panzer, though I do agree that the cavalry kicks booty in its time. Panzers, though, can wreak a lot of havoc in the modern age. Having Germany as a neighbor tends to make me a little nervous.

Cavalry. They dominate when you first get them.

In my opinion, it's the infantry. Useful as attack and defense unit in the siege-type industrial age war (before the introduction of tanks). Infantry can defend your cities until the introduction of Modern Armor with great success.

But I voted for the bomber. The Air Force can change the tide of a war and speed up things in a war that's already decided. The capability of destroying infrastructure behind the frontlines is invaluable.

I say the Immortals. Get them early and start warring early, you will have the continent that you are on totally under your control before anybody gets knights.

My favorite is the worker.

Yep. May not be on the front lines, but every bit as important. You can win games without a UU, but try it without any workers, captured or otherwise.

Workers/settlers co-first. Very hard to do without either.
Artillery (of all types) second. Yes, artillery is definitely the coolest, but 'pults, 'buckets, and cannons are all game-savers.

General unit? Ansar warrior -- not even listed. Easily my favorite UU. Extra movement AND cheaper cost? Rock on. After that, probably rider and then sipahi.

Since NONE of these answers are even in the poll, I'm forced to just not vote.

I've never tried playing Arabia, but I'd agree on rider and sipahi. I just voted cavalry, since that's the unit they replace.

Edit: Oops...rider replaces knights, doesn't it?
