A new game. You have several hints, related to history, that you can use to find something.
Contrary to other game, it doesn't require only historical knowledge, but to also solve some riddles to find the final answer!

The goal for the first one is to find an historica character. The character himself is famous, so everyone coudl find him. The hints and riddles are difficult, so you may need to work together to find the solution, and ask questions to help. I'll answer to questions mostly by yes and no ;).

If you find the answer to one of the hint alone, you get 3 points. You get 2 points if you find it, but if others gave useful ideas first, and you get 1 point if you give a useful idea to help find a hint, but did not found the hint.
If you find the final characer alone, you get 6 points, if you find it with help (other than the answers to the hints), 4 points, and 2 points for a useful idea that helps connect the hint to the character.

Research is allowed.

Here are the hints
1 - When died he who defeated 3 legions in Teutoburg forest

2 - Many like me served our Emperors.

3 - William Henry Harrison followed by James Monroe

4 - Shropshire regiment after 1757

5 - Caesar's and Augstus's Gemina minus Triumphalis and Macedonia

6 - 10% of the international standard of mass since 1889

7 - Where the Council of Europe seats

8 - The one that saw his death crossing a river

Clue to put the hints together:
2413- 6857

Clue 1 could be 21 - the year in which Arminius died.

Clue 2 is Murat but the answer that makes him like others could be anything from Cavalryman, Marshal, Frenchman, Clothes Horse etc.

Clue 3 could be the number 59 since the two presidents didn't follow on from eachother (Monroe the 5th President was before Harrison the 9th, so couldn't "follow on" from him)

Clue 4 probably refers to the 53rd Foot, also known as the Shropshire regiment. They were renumbered in that year.

Clue 7 - The council of Europe is in Strasbourg.

Clues 5, 6 and 8, I have no idea about

I'll take a wild stab in the dark at Napoleon being the overall answer. He died in 1821 and the 2nd Battalion of the Shropshire regiment provided the garrison for St Helena. It could be argued that by crossing the Niemen into Russia (clue 8) he sealed his fate but that would be a stretch. How the rest falls into place I have no idea - the clues are a little vague for my liking.

That's a good start.

Clue 1 is correct. 3 points. Murat is a part of clue 2, and you included in your list what is the "others". 1 point.

For clue 3, 59 is not correct, but you have it almost right. My sentence was correct, you should not try to correct it ;). 1 point.

Clue 4 is the 53rd of foot, 3 points.

Clue 7: the council is indeed in Strasburg, but that's only a part of the clue. 1point.

You are wrong in your wild guess.

But you have 9 points so far.

Well that's about all that makes any sense to me frankly, someone else will have to get the rest.

5 - Caesar's and Augstus's Gemina minus Triumphalis and Macedonia

Im a bit stumped on this one.

A Gemina is obviously a double legion - but as far as I know there were only three Gemina under Caesar and Augustus, and none were called Triumphalis or Macedonia. In Fact, I have never heard of a legion called Triumphalis.

Might dig out some books later that I haven't read for a couple of years and take a gander.

Eight is Barbarossa, not Frederick Barbarossa. He who died crossing a river is Frederick, the map depict operation Barbarossa.

EDIT : ARGH. Hit reply instead of edit, sorry mods.

@Sydhe: the SI unit of mass is the kilogram. But what is the international standard of mass? And the date is important. However, one little point.

@Oda: The map is operation Barbarossa, so you can find a part of the clue, which is Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Nothing new from you here.
Read carefully the other parts of the clue.

@Oblivion: the clue is indeed related with Legions. 1 Point

I used wiki, as I didn't see it forbidden anywhere, but I'll put it in spoiler tags anyway.

Spoiler :

Caesar's and Augstus's Gemina minus Triumphalis and Macedonia
I started with Triumphalis, Triumphalis was a roman road, reopened by Mussolini. It was used for parades. It runs through several forums.
I also searched for Gemina and Triumphalis and Macedonia, and all I found was your post :p.

I do know that mass thing, it's iridium. In 1889 a kilogram was defined as the mass of a certain plate of platina with 10% iridium, stored in France.

clue to put things togeter:
the difference is 4444.

You are perfectly allowed to use Wiki, the clue are designed in such a way that you need to be clever, and not only get info from Wiki

Nothing new for Caesar and Augustus. I can just tell you that the necessary info are indeed available from Wiki, but you need to know where to look.

Good spot for Iridium. The international standard of mass is still a piece of alloy, made 90% of Platinium and 10% of Iridium.
However, Iridium itself is not enough, you need a little something else to find the clue. 1 point.

Clue to put the hint together: not even close :D !

The answers all seem to be numbers so here are some numbers associated with what we have so far:
hint 2: could be 38 (number of Marshals who served under French Emperors (26 under Napoleon I; 12 under Napoleon III) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshal_of_France

hint 6: the atomic mass of iridium is 77

hint 8: Barbarossa was "Frederick I" so the answer could be 1

hint 7: wild idea: the Council of Europe sits in Strasbourg which is on the Ill river and "Ill" looks like the Roman numeral for 3

Very good! 2 points for noticing all the answers are number, which is an important part in finding the character.

Hint 2: Correct, 38 Marshalls served under Napoleon I and III. 2 points, as PrivateHudson identified Murat first.

Hint 6 : Correct, 77 is he atomic mass or Iridium, 2 points.

Hint 8: not correct. It won't fit with the first part of the hint.

So, that's 6 points.

hint 5: Caesar's and Augstus's Gemina: Legion X and/or XIII
minus: Legion IX (Triumphalis) and Legion IV (Macedonica)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roman_legions
this gives an answer of (10 + 13) - (9 + 4) = 10?

Good try. But Only one Gemina is necessary, the XIII, that gives 0.

2 more points. Just behind PrivateHudson!

Only hints 3, 7 and 8 are missing

Alright, time to compile stuff about clue 3:

James Monroe

President No. 5

Democratic-Republican Party

Inaguarated March 4, 1817

Terms Served:2

William Henry Harrison

President No. 9

Whig Party

Inagurated March 4, 1841

Terms served: 1 (only one month)

What does that mean? I have no idea.

EDIT: more stuff

The Whigs came about to conteract the Democratic-Republicans, you might even say they split from the Republican Party.

Every elected Whig party President died in office.

I still have no idea at all what this could mean.

W.H. Harrison followed by Monroe. Perhaps it has to do with their ratings by someone else, maybe their ranking as Presidents? Harrison came AFTER Monroe, so he Monroe couldn't have followed him.

Based on your response to privatehudson's answer to hint 3, the answer must be 95.

A number associated with the Council of Europe is 46 (the number of member states) so that could be the answer to hint 7.
