This is about how I feel right now.
I'm updating my mod for Crusader Kings II. I have a special mod folder where I keep all my files, and another folder where I keep the version of CKII that existed before the last DLC. Winmerge allows me to compare files between all three of them.
Since landed_titles is a very big file with a lot of changes, I don't simply move it to my mod folder. I take its post-Holy Fury version and place it on the desktop, and, over the course of many hours, painstakingly integrate all my changes into it. Then I rename the one in the mod folder to something else, to use as a reference in case I messed something up, and moved the updated version into it.
I just clicked on Notepad++ again. It immediately told me that some files appear to no longer exist (which happens when you move them to different locations), would I like to remove them from the editor, yadda yadda, and seeing no reason not to I clicked yes.
Imagine my surprise when, after reopening it, it was IDENTICAL to the previous version. There's no possibility that I clicked the wrong one. In that folder, there is only landed_titles.txt and previous landed_titles.txt. It cannot have somehow 'reverted' to an earlier state because it was never identical to the other one, being from version 3.0.1.
Closing the tabs is what lost me access to the updated version, but how could a file be changed simply from moving it? The only thing I can think of is that previous landed_titles.txt used to have the same name, so somehow it overwrote the new landed_titles.txt when I placed it in the same folder.
Notepad++'s restore recent tabs function didn't get me it back. I don't think I opened it in Winmerge. I'm NOT doing all the grunt work over again, not on your life. I'd tear apart my computer to get it back.
If it turns out I can't, I would be willing to pay someone on here to do that grunt work, but they'd have to be meticulous.
